TREES PLANTED Some of the first plant
ings of Modesto ash, a small shade tree
chosen by the Medford Street Tree com
mittee for Barnett rd.. were made recently
by residents of the area. The picture above
shows members of the Ascension Lutheran
church, 2501 Barnelt rd., as they planted
one of several along the church frontage.
The trees will eventually extend up and
down both sides of Barnett rd. at 50-foot
intervals, in rows 39-feet from the center to
allow for the possibility of widening the road
in the future. Adults above are, (eft to right,
Paul Jorgehson, the Rev. Elvin Tollefson,
pastor of the Ascension Luthern church,
and Chuck Swenson. The children are Scott
and Gary Jorgenson and Dave and Chuck
Swenson.
Belligerent Youth
Subdued by Police;
Hostage Unharmed
Pulaski, Va.-UPD-A belliger
ent teen-ager who barricaded
himself in his father-in-law's
home for 31 hours with a 10-year-old
girl hostage was cap
tured screaming Tuesday
night during a tear gas bar
rage. The girl was found unharm
ed. Jack Jennings, 18, an un
employed mill hand, driven
from the house by the tear
gas, was beaten into submis
sion by police when he rushed
out screaming and fighting.
His hostage ran from the
house ahead of Jennings. She
was examined by a doctor
and then taken to her anxious
parents.
Taken to Hospital
Officers seized Jennings by
the collar and the seat of his
pants and pushed him, his
face cut and bleeding, into a
police car where he was strap
ped in a straight jacket. He
was driven directly to the
southwestern State Mental
Hosiptal at Marion, Va.
' The long siege began about
4 p.m. Monday after Jennings
broke away from officers tak
ing him to jail following a
preliminary hearing on auto
theft charges. He grabbed his
young sister-in-law, Barbara
Butts, and barricaded himself
in the home of his father-in-law,
C. W. Butts.
When police surrounded
the modest brick home in this
quiet southwest Virginia town
of 12,000, Jennings, armed
with a shotgun and a rifle.
threatened to "die young and
go out with a big blast."
Vows to Kill Cops
Jennings vowed to "kill me
a couple of cops" and later
fired an arrow through a win
attached threatening to rape
dow of the house with a note
the young girl.
Police delayed use of force
to get the trigger-happy youth
to come out because they
feared he would harm the
girl. But jittery officers, tired
of waiting and listening to the
threats - and curses of the
young tough with a duck
tailed haircut, fired eight or
nine tear gas shells through
the window of the house and
the tense drama came to an
abrupt end.
Jennings blamed his troub
les on his father-in-law and
his wife, Sandra, a 16-year-old
high school student who
he said bitterly was "always
away at night."
He said he had "a very low
opinion" of his wife because
she never did anything for
him and never ironed his
shirts.

Trees . . .
By JOHN CRIBBLE
(Editor's not! The fol
lowing comments on trees,
particularly those adapta
ble to street use in Medford,
have been prepared by John
Gribble, well - known re
tired forester, and will be
run in a series during the
'tree planting season" here,

A sign on a tree, "Some
thing marvelous is going on
here," would cause most of
us to stop, look and listen.
Such a sign is on every tree,
inviting us to observe. The
more we recognize the sign,
the more fascinating and
pleasing will be our observa
tions. Some spectacular attraction-:
come and go with
the seasons.
Midwinter growing of male
pollinating catkins on some
trees and early spring show
ing of red, black, brown tip
ped fruitbuds are attractive.
Trees have an identifying
charactrcistic for each of our
five senses, some are most
pleasing-flowering, fragrance,
artistic leaf and bark forms
and colorings; each tree with
its individual shape and
growth, and each for man's
special use. Oak for the ship's
knees, tall straight conifers
for masts, enabled man to
navigate the seas. The Ash,
partial to colors, red, white,
blue, black, green, mane
man's tool handles, paddles,
baseball bats, skis, bows and
arrows, even a good broom.
Ash leaflets are set opposite,
in pairs, along a central stem.
Modesto Ash, fraxinus velu
tina glabra, is a new, beau
tiful shade and street tree,
growing quite rapidly to 20
feet in height, with shining,
I pendulous foliage. The Mo
desto becomes a sturdy, round
crowned, smooth-green-barked
tree.

Confessed Killer
Scheduled To Die
Reno- d'PD - Confessed mur
derer Thayne Archibald, 21,
today faces death in the state
gas chamber for the brutal
shooting of a Livermore,
Calif., high school honor stu
dent. Sentence was passed Tues
day afternoon after a panel
of three district Judges spent
a week hearing evidence from
the state and defense to de
termine whether the slaying
of Larry Waters, 17, was first
or second degree murder.
Judge Jon Collins, who read
the verdict, ordered the de
fendant from Roy, Utah, to
be executed during the week
beginning June 26. The three
judge hearing marked the
first use of a new Nevada
law which requires such pro
ceedings in cases where mur
der has been confessed.
Judge Collins told the half
filled courtroom the death
penalty was the unanimous
decision of the panel.
Archibald was captured in
Oregon several days after the
shooting.
