Lent Described as Steps of
Devotion Leading to Empty Cross
By THE REV,

On the Island of Iona whose
white-sand shores are washed
by blue billows of the Atlantic
off the coast of Scotland, a
visitor may discover among
the red granite, rocky hills -on
the hill called "Dun I" - a
circle of unhewn stones half
hidden in the grass. This is
the foundation of what was
known as the "Hermit's Cell."
To this hallowed place in the
Middle Ages pilgrims from all
over Europe journeyed to re
ceive the counsel and bless
ing of the wise saint who
lived here. If the visitor will
look further, he will discern
in the wildflower dappled
grass, three flat stepping
stones about two yards apart.
Apparently the pilgrims al
ways kneeled on these stones
and said their private devo
tions before coming into the
presence of God's man.
Lent may be described as
the steps of devotion and
preparation that lead to the
empty cross of Easter Day. We
prepare for the great oc
casions in life, as for a wed
ding or going on a long jour
ney. So we ought to prepare
for Easter.
From earliest times the
church has practiced "fast
ing," which is the original
meaning of "Lent." As Jesus
fasted in the wilderness for
40 days, so his children are
exhorted to do so. There has
never been, however, any uni
formity In the nature or
length of the fast. In the
Third Century, fasting was
for 40 hours between the af
ternoon of Good Friday and

Washington - OJPD - Space
Agency Director T. Keith
Glennan says he would like
for the United States and Rus

and other space projects.
Glennan, head of the Na

night the United States had
made no such proposals to
Russia but added, "I would
like to see this happen."
He said he thought that "in
the space business we have

for international cooperation
which we ought to push just

other times it was two weeks.
Even when fasting was ob

even though fasting, in and

be good.
However we observe the

to set this time apart as a holy

Margaret J. I want to be
to be an actress.
Mrs. L. J. I doesn't lead to
any good. -
. .
Margaret J. I am a 16-year-old
girl who wants very
much to become an actress.
I've been in a lot of school
plays and everyone thinks I'm
very good.
My problem is that my
mother is opposed to my am
bition. The reason is that my
aunt is an actress and mother
doesn't approve of her. Per
sonally I think my mother is
a little jealous. My aunt is
gorgeous and a marvelous per
son. I absolutely adore her,
but Mother doesn't even want
me to see her as much as I
do.
My aunt has Invited me to
spend the week with her in
New York and she promises
to take me to every play and
introduce me to all her
friends, but Mother doesn't
want to let me go.
...
Mrs. L. - J. I'll make no
bones about the fact that I
definitely don't want Mar
garet to be an actress. In my
opinion it leads to no good.
My sister was lucky enough
to enjoy a little success, but
she is not a happy woman.
She has been married twice
and couldn't make a go of It
because her career interfered.
She is now close to 40 and
is bitterly unhappy because
she never had a child and a
normal woman's life.
I don't like the kind of life
my sister leads or the kind
of people she runs around
with. I love her as a sister,
but I don't want Margaret to
grow up anything like her.

Yet Margaret keeps making
an Idol out of her. I don't
know how to convince her.
...
The Council! Children and
adolescents can't be talked
out of hero worship. They
need heroes and heroines as
they grow up. Their parents
are their first, but they must
expand their horizons outside
the limits of their immediate
families in order to grow into
individuals with an active re
lationship to their own generation.
Margaret may never be
come an actress, yet we think
she has much to gain by hav
ing ambition and by knowing
somebody who personifies
some of her ambitions. Of
course, Mrs. L. J. is right to
point out that the aunt is not
a happy woman, that her life
may seem glamorous on the
surface, but that heartache,
loneliness and bitterness exist
beneath the tinsel.
We also think Mrs. L. J. Is
prone to generalize her sis
ter's experience. Although the
theatrical world has its share
of personal failures, these
exist in other realms too.
Many modest housewlfes fail
to achieve real satisfaction in
their marriages and some ac
tresses do manage to create a
fine family life.
We are always in favor of
tackling such problems from
the positive rather than the
negative point of view. If Mar
garet is keenly Interested In
acting she should learn as
much as possible about It. She
will soon find out about the
drudgery and frustration in
volved In working toward a
goal. She will also learn how
few individuals with her am
bition actually make the
grade.
Eventually Margaret should
arrive at a realistic appraisal
of the situation. She may de
cide by herself that It's not
the life for her. If, on the
other hand, she is willing to
work and ready to face the
possibility of defeat, she
should not be squelched. She
will discover, as we all do.
that there Is also such a thing
as compromise in life. Many
happy homemakers do a little
theater work on the side and
some frustrated actresses wind
up as excellent and fulfilled
speech or dramatics teachers.
However, we don't think
Mrs. L. J. should let Margaret
visit her aunt for an extended
period if she feels she will be
exposed to wrong Influences.
She should be very firm on
tnis point, but reasonable and
sympathetic toward her am
bitions. (Copyright I960,
