Schumacher Invited
To Salem Hearing

macher said he hat been in
vited to appear before the leg
, islative interim committee on
(- taxation during its hearing in
., Salem Tuesday, April 19. to
present his proposed five-
point tax improvement pro-
i gram.
The Interim committee for
merly was scheduled to meet
' April 22 and 23, but has re
! scheduled its meeting for
.'.April 18 and 19.
' In his program, Schu
macher has recommended that
a new tax base be provided
" for operational school budgets
to improve Oregon's overall
tax picture and place the state
In a favorable position for in-
dustrial develpment.
Schumacher's suggest ed
five-point program includes: A
statute limiting school taxes
on property to bonding issues
only; millage limitation for all
: taxing districts similar to the
state of Washington; enact
- ment of a sales tax allotted to
operational school fund with
any additional amount needed
; to come from the state general
fundi school tax fund to be
administered at the state level
and allocated to the school
districts on a school child unit
based on the class of the dis
trict. ' j
Crater Lake Park
Engineer Named
James L. Bainbridge, for
merly of Tongue Point, Asto
ria, has assumed duties as
park engineer at Crater Lake
National park, Superinten
dent Olto M. Brown has an
nounced. Bainbridge was general en
gineer at the public works de
partment at the naval station
at Tongue Point. He fills s va
cancy at Crater Lake park
created when Richard Holmes
was transferred to Mt. Rai
nier National park.
Bainbridge has a civil en
gineering degree from the Uni
versity of Idaho. He held va
rious engineering positions in
Idaho, including work with
the state highway department,
state reclamation department,
and the city of Lewiston.
He also has worked with
the corps of engineers, the
war department at Anchorage,
and the Alaska Road commis
sion at Juneau and Fairbanks.
He had been in Astoria since
May, 1935,
Suspect Held in
Slaying of Women

lice today held a 21-year-old
man as a possible suspect In
the slaying of three women
In Starved Rock Illinois State
Park March 16.
Lasalle County, 111., Sher
iff Ray Eutsey said he would
arrive here today to question
Richard Anthony Bunnell of
Paris, 111. Bunnell was arrest
ed here March 30 on a va
grancy charge.
Police became suspicious
when they found a road map
In his 'possession marking a
route from Bloomlngton, 111.,
to Flagstaff, Ariz. Blooming
ton is about 50 miles from
Starved Rock Park.
Bunnell denied any knowl
edge of the triple slaying of
the three Chicago area wom
en, Mrs. Frances Murphy, 47;
Mrs. Mildred Lindquist, 50,
and Mrs. Lillian Oetting, 50.
The bodies of the three
women were found side-by-side
in a cave in the park.

And anyway, she explained,
they only sing during the
mating season.

ants to "learn to live with
them."
