To Birdj are Unuiuil
Unlike t!ie bones of other
warm blooded snlmals, those
of birds are hollow and filled
with air. Buoyancy and ex
treme lightness are built-in
features that come as stand
ard equipment. The legs of
birds-even those of the do
mestic fowls are covered
with scales, a holdover from
the dim past when birds
were closely related to the
reptiles.
There are many other
things pertaining to birds that
are unusual. Not the least of
which is the peculiar device,
probably a "locking" system,
whereby the perching birds
can grip the branch of a tree,
a wire or any other object
merely by squatting; as long
as the crouching position is
maintained the locking de
vice holds the bird in place.
The bird can go to sleep
perfectly confident that its
hold on the support will be
maintained without its con
scious effort or intention.
Merely by raising the body
up It releases the grip.
Merer Lies Down
The bird, of necessity, must
spend Its life in an upright
position. That is it always sits;
it never lies down to rest or
sleep.
Members of the duck fam
ily keep their bodies in a
horizontal position at all
times, where they are sitting,
laying or flying. Most other
birds are more or less verti
cal while resting, and horizon
tal while in flight. When a
bird comes to rest on a tree
limb. It comes in horizontally.
But when it alights, it again
assumes a vertical position.
Those members of the bird
family that do not fly much
remain urpight nearly all the
time. Domestic ducks, chick
ens, and all the barnyard
fowls seldom take any posi
tion except that of the verti
cal. Another strange behavior
pattern with most birds is
egg-laying beyond the normal
time of its duration. Of
course a hen lays -eggs for
only one purpose, and that
reason is not because her
owner makes more' money
but only because her eggs
are taken away from her.
Will Slop Laying
Normally she will stop lay
ing when she has a nest-full of
eggs, or as many as the can
comfortably Incubate. She
wants to raise a family, so she
continues to lay, and as fast
as they are taken away, she
lays more, hoping all the time
she can eventually catch up
and get a nest full. To hatch
the eggs is her primary ob
jective. Many of the wild birds spe
cies will react the same way
up to a point, but they cannot
be fooled for so long as the
domestic hen. If the female
bird has actually begun incu
bation and her eggs are stol
en, she often will begin lay
ing again.
No Explanation
' Maybe this doesn't appear
like much of an accomplish
ment, but it is, and no one
has explained exactly what
mechanism triggers the re
newed egg-laying urge or
what chemical change must
be brought about to repeat
the performance.
- Some powerful influence,
within the bird itself, goes
back into gear again and a
function that was discontin
ued or arrested reactivates
itself. This seems to be a ter
rific strain on the bird's sys
tem. By some mysterious
method Nature tries to com
pensate for the egg-loss. Sci
entifically, it probably can be
explained. But actually it's
not so simple; there are still
some pretty rounded corners
to the seemingly abrupt an-Jtles.
