a nine grade track meet Fri

McLoughlin's five winners
were Mike Watkins in the
iavelin. Jack Lowery in the
shot put, Dale Stansfield in
the high jump, Hon La i Kins
in the 660-yard run and Mark
Marrel In the discus.
South swept the 75-yard
dash, the three-quarter mile
and the board jump. Trojans
also were one-two in the low
hurdles, 150 dash and the pole
vault. Mac's Bulldogs had
first and second placers in the
shot put and discus.
McLoughlin eighth grade
won 88 to 25 from Ashland on
Thursday and the Bulldogs
seventh was 68 2-5 to 7 J-a
victor.

The Medford school took 10
of 13 events in the eighth
grade rivalry with Mike
Barnes a triple winner. He
won the low hurdles, the 150
and the broad Jump. His leap
of 17 feet 10 Mi inches was an
McLoughlin eighth grade rec
ord. Other Bulldogs eighth vic
tors were Rick Larson in the
high hurdles, Chuck Kimball
in the discus and shot, Skip
Van Sickle in the pole vault,
Todd Dole in the 660, Steve
Ettlea In the high jump and
the relay team of Jim Allen,
Ron McGuire, Ron Edmonds
and Barnes. Ashland first
place men were Gamble in
the 75, Trost in the 330 and
Johnson in the Javelin.
McLoughlin won eight of
the seventh grade events with
Curt Wyatt taking the 150
and shot and running on the
winning relay team with
Steve Edmonds, John Fisher
and Art Lee, Don Young took
the low hurdles, Lee the 75,
Ron Stockman the high jump,
Rick Templcton the pole
vault and Steve Deubcrt (he
broad jump. Ramsey won the
330 for Ashland.

said Friday he had "absolute
ly no comment" on reports he
was quitting as athletic direc
tor at the University of Ore
gon.
Reports were that Harris
would resign at Oregon to
take a similar post at a school
in the San Francisco bay area
Harris has held the Oregon
post since 1947. He graduated
from Stanford in 1927 where
he earned three letters in foot
ball as tackle. He was head
coach of Fresno High school
and Fresno Slate college be
fore coming to Oregon.

one generally jokes about the
19th hole but there wasn t a
bit of laughter in it for down
hearted Dow Finsterwald.
Finsterwald should have
been leading the Masters Fri
day with a classy 139 total
for two rounds. Instead, he
was one stroke back of Arnold
Palmer with 141 and thereby
hung a tale of all the harm
practicing can do.
The 30-year-old Finsterwald
sweated it out for almost a
half hour on the 18th green
after finishing his round Fri
day waiting to learn whether
the officials had decided to
disqualify him or not.
When they finally made up
their minds to invoke a two-
stroke penalty on him, chang
ing his opening day score
from 69 to 71, Dow walked
outside the ropes that guard
the 18th green and told re
porters: "The ruling is by far the
best I could have hoped for."
"I putted just off the fifth
green in the opening round
Thursday," Finsterwald ex
plained. "There is no question
about it being a breach of the
rules. It says so plainly on
the back of the scorecard.
"At the time I did it, I was
playing with Ken Venturi. I
started doing the same thing
today (Friday), but Billy Cas
per, who was playing with
me, pointed out that 1
couldn't. I told him 1 had
done it Thursday."

in track and field Friday. The
Red Raiders utilized this as
set to win a three-way meet at
Monmouth. Scores were SOC
75 13, Oregon college 46 13
and Pacific 39 13.
The Red Raiders won five
clear cut firsts and tied for
two others.
Charles Swingle won the
quarter mile in :53 on a day
in which marks were held
down by rain, wind and cold.
Stu Baker running into the
wind in the 100-yard dash and
finishing against the breeze
in the 220 nabbed both events
in -.10.5 and :23.3. Swingle
and Baker teamed with Ora
Banister and Don Story to
take the mile relay in 3:35.7.
Don Korth captured the
Javelin with 169-9.
John Harvey established a
Southern Oregon school rec
ord when he tied at 12 feet 4
inches with Colin Morse of
OCE for first in the pole vault.

to the defense of its South
ern Oregon conference base
ball banner Friday. The Tor
nado smothered the Ashland
Grizzlies 21 to 2 then, for
good measure took a 3 to 0
no-hlt victory over the Lithia
city team in a non-counting
second game.
The bat of power-swatting
Lowel Dean resounded again.
Dean clubbed four hits in five
times at bat and drove in
eight runs. Three of his smash
es were doubles. The big first
baseman socked three for
three and brought In six runs
In the league engagement
Medford pitcher Herb
Wheeler held the Grizzlies to
four hits in the opener. He-
struck out five batters and
walked only three. All three
free passes came in the sev
enth inning when he tired. A
double play on centerfielder
Wayne Thompson s catch and
throw to Ray Konopasek at
second base bailed the hurler
out and ended the game.
Grisilies Score First
Bob Q u i n n e y, chucking
three innings, and Pat Mc
Loughlin, going two, held the
Ashlanders hitless in the sec
ond scrape.
Ashland did the first scor
ing in the conference scuffle
when Paul Alley got on base
on an error in the first inning
and Dave Jackson tripled him
home. But Medford came back
with nine runs in the same
canto on eight straight hits,
two errors, three walks and
a hit batter.
Ken Durkee and Ken Jen
sen cracked triples and Dick
Ragsdale, Cal and Lowell
Dears, Mike Parsons, Jerry
Anderson and Ray Konopasek
singles. Cal Dean's was a blast
too hot for second baseman
Brad Gettling and Parson's
hit was on a tough chance for

son. The first seven hits and
seven runs were oft Nelson,
who was relieved by Bob King
with one out in the frame.

Three Medford markers
crossed in the third inning on

by Lowell Dean, a groundout
by Parsons and an error. Five

panel on Konopasek and

at bat on a Cal Dean double,

Rogue league baseball Friday.
The Pirates of Glendale
downed Eagle Point 7 to 1 at
Eagle Point and IV blanked
Rogue River 4 to 0 at Rogue
River.
Jack Berline of Glendale
held the Eagles down with a
one-hit pitching job while the
Pirates were getting six safe
swats. He struck out batters
18 times and issued four
walks.
Glendale scored twice in the
third inning on a walk, a hit
by Burke and a triple by Mc
Laughlin. Two more runs
came in during the fourth
inning on three bases on balls,
a wild pitch and a groundout,
In the fifth inning for three
tallies there were an error, a
wild pitch, two walks and a
double by Glen Blevins.
Anderson Doubles

Friday.
Friday's marked only the
third loss for Eureka over a
three-year period. In this time
the Logger netters have play
ed 95 matches, including their
summer tourney competition.
All the Eureka losses have
been 4 to 3.

their more intense summer

and said that the match rank
ed as one of the top efforts by

an all-time record high of
146,000 deer killed in Oregon
last year.
The elk kill was 8,975, a
near record.
The 1939 final tabulation
also showed a kill of slightly
more than 983,000 upland
game birds of all species, and
604,500 ducks and geese.
The previous record deer
kill was 134,000 made in
19551. .
A total of 248,701 hunters
bought licenses in 1959.
