appointed an assistant man
ager of the U. S. National
Bank's Medford branch, E. C
Sammons, Portland, presi
dent, has announced.
He was former loan counter
assistant at the bank. The
change becomes effective lm
mediately.
Eastwood joined the bank-
lng organization in Medford
in 1947, starting In the inter
ior department and advancing
through numerous depart-
ments in the local branch. He
worked as a teller in the sav
ings, commercial, escrow and
note departments, and was
named head note teller in
1951.
He was named loan counter
assistant in 1955.
Active in civic affairs, East
wood is a member of the Cra
ter Lions club, the chamber
of commerce, and Is active in
Boy Scout work here. He is
on the board of deacons of the
First Presbyterian church,
and executive director and
treasurer of the Jackson coun
ty unit of the American Can

year-old Wisconsin baby sit
ter and a young Connecticut
lifeguard have been chosen
to receive the Young Ameri
can Medals for Bravery for
1958.
Attorney General William
P. Rogers has announced that
Sharon Lois Boero, 18, of In
dependence, Wis., and Neil
Walter Lorenson Jr., 15, of
Waterbury, Conn., will re
ceive the medals awarded an
nually since 1950.
Sharon was selected "be
cause of her bravery and the
disregard of her own. safety
in rescuing three children
from a burning building and
assisting in the rescue of a
fourth," the Justice Depart
ment announcement said.
Young Lorenson won his
medal for the rescue a 1U-
year-old girl who had been
swept out to sea by a rip tide
in high surf off fog-enshroud

Heavy Drinking

has been substantial cause of
serious and often violent
crime.

have played a vital role in the
prevention of delinquency by-
keeping a close watch on sales
of liquor to minors, he said
He said excessive drinking
Is "frequently the chief cause
of divorce and family break
ups - ask any judge who
handles domestic relations
cases and I think you'll find
that he agrees."

recognition for boys and girls
who perform outstanding acts
of bravery or service each
year. There were no recom
mendations for the service
award for 1958.
Sharon is the daughter of
Louis and Margaret Scott
Boero. Her father was killed
while serving with the Navy
In the Pacific during World
War II. She was recommend
ed for the bravery medal by
Wisconsin Gov. Vernon W.
Thompson for her rescue of
the four children of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Everson, the
night of Feb. 8, 1958.
While sleping on a daven
port, she was awakened by
smoke and found the area of
the apartment where the chil
dren were sleeping engulfed
In flames. Calmy, she took
three-year-old Ellen Everson
in her arms and eight-year-old
Peggy by the hand and led
them out of the building. She
re-entered the blazing build
ing, suffering burns on both
her hands and face, to rescue
the other two children.
Own Life Endangered
Nell, son of a department
store employee in Waterbury,
Conn., was assisting the reg
ular lifeguard at Fenway
Beach when he performed his
spectacular rescue. In submit
ting Neil's nomination for the
bravery medal. Gov. Christo
pher Del Sesto of Rhode Is
land, said:.
"The rescue efforts demon
strated by Neil for the length
of time in the fog-enshroudea
sea with his own life endan
gered from the time he star
ted from shore, and the uncer
tainty of the time when assis
tance would arrive, u ever,
distinguishes this rescue from
the type which is made in one
swift action."
Neil kept Catherine Bu
chanan of Ontario, Canada,
afloat in the heavy seas for
nearly 30 minutes while tides
pushed them away from shore
before life guards could tow
them to safety.

small foreign car crashed into
a bridge abutment on U.S.

nesday, killing three women
and a three-month-old boy.
A fourth woman, Mrs. Jo
Ann Doyle, 21, Tacoma, the
infant's mother and daughter
of one of the victims, was in
critical condition at Ellens
burg general hospital.
Dead were Mrs. Lela Hill,
47, Benton City, Wash., moth
er of Mrs. Doyle, Dorothy Lou
ise Humphrey, 35, Avondale,
Mo.; Maggie Lempkin, 72, also
Avondale; and Craig Doyle,
three months.
The accident occurred
about 3V4 miles west of here.
Police said the car, driven by
Mrs. Doyle, went off the right
side of the road and hit the
abutment.

knew, because they lived in
a far-distant city.

fornia, have found a strain
of mice, the members of which
prefer alcohol to water.
Most mice prefer water.
Here, then, we have clear-cut
evidence of a hereditary fond.

The Doctor Who Could Not
Call an Ambulance
I was just reading of a
New Jersey woman who has
been fined $200 and costs for
her refusal to interrupt an
18-minute gossip with a neigh
bor, and stop chatting long
enough so that a doctor could
call an ambulance to rush a
man with a bad heart attack
to a hospital. Five times the
doctor begged her to let him
have the phone for a minute,
and each time she told him
to go to a certain very warm
place!
Many a person who has had
this doctor's experience with
a telephone gossiper, especi
ally when he was trying to
put through an Important and
hurried long-distance call, will
rejoice that the doctor lodged
a complaint, and that the
judge punished the woman.
A few hundred times, when
I have had to call someone
long distance-in a hurry, and
especially someone who was
waiting anxiously for my mes
sage about a sick relative, I
have found the line busy. I
knew then that the person
would gladly have Interrupted
her conversation if she had
only known I was trying to
get through to her.
I have often wondered why
the telephone company does
not use a certain brief musi
cal tone to warn a person that
someone is calling the num
ber from a long distance. I
am sure the company must
