    In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
At the hour this is written,
the votes in Wisconsin have
been counted. The vote stands
Senator Kennedy, 476.000;
Senator Humphrey 371,000.
That is on the Democratic
ide ol the Wisconsin primary
election voting. On the Re
publican Side. Vipp.PrnciHi..it
Nixon came up with a total ol
osi, uuu.
OENATOR Kennedy says:
"I am pleased to win. My
wife and I came as strangers,
and we did well." His brother
Robert, who took an active
part in the campaign, is a lit
tle more enthusiastic. He says:
"It's a tantastlc victory."
Senator Humphrey says:
"I airv satisfied with the out
come,', ynd don't feel injured
at air: .
Mr. Nixon says: "Observers
agrcfe that our (Republican)
vote? was surprisingly large in
view of the fact that there
was nd contest for Republican
delegates and I didn't cam
paign in the state."
Apparently
The much - discussed Wis
consin primary was a great
success. Everybody seems to
be pleased with it.
1VITH that out of the way,
" let's get down to brass
tacks:
I think most thoughtful peo
ple will agree that the big is
sue of this Presidential cam
paign that is now officially
under way will be this:
Shall we drift farther over
in the direction of what is
rather incorrectly termed
LIBERALISM, or shall we
turn, at least slightly, back
toward what some of us like
to call intelligent modern
CONSERVATISM?

AS TO that, the Wisconsin
primary offers no conclu
sive answer.
Mr. Kennedy, the outstand
ing winner, is at least a little
more conservative than his
opponent, Mr. Humphrey. He
comes of reasonably conser
vative ancestry, but his cam
paign in Wisconsin by no
means stressed conservative
leanings.
Besides, the Wisconsin pri
mary results were clouded by
the religious issue, which as
sumed increasing importance
as the campaign progressed.
The Kennedy victory, which
was decisive, indicates that
the time is past when a Cath
olic can no longer aspire to
the presidency.
The religious issue over
shadowed whatever liberal
ism vs. conservatism issue
might have been present. The
result seems to indicate a
growth of TOLERANCE in
American thinking.
AT ANY rate, the Wisconsin

dent.
From now until the conven
tion in Los Angeles, he is the
man for all the other Demo
cratic candidates to beat.

Gutman of Shields & Co. ob
serves this week that very
often Americans do not live
for money so much as they
do for excitement.
This seems, he says, the real
reason why stocks which are
big with assets and cash but
low on exciting possibilities
don't sell very high but those
low on cash and assets but
long on hopes leave jet
streams through the skies.
Just making money doesn't
seem to be the big thing, the
reasons. It's got to be the best
or its boring.
If this is the way we are
it's quite an exciting way to
be but it means that you are
not going to find people buy
ing or selling stock for the
reasons you thought they
would have, the Shields & Co.
analyst maintained.
W. E. Hutton & Co. points
out that the building shares
seem to be down enough to
invite moderate purchases
particularly now that the
credit situation is a little
easier. It likes Johns-Manville
which has been acting better
than the market. National
