Psychiatric Theories Shattered
One of the most distressing
things that has happened late
ly to some psychoanalysts has
been their discovery that the
arm-chair theories of insanity
which, for 40 years, they have
lived by and worked with
now appear to be inadequate.
For years, all
of us have
been reading
in analy
tic literature
their theory
that insanity
is due to sex
u a 1 injuries
sustained b y
the person
on. alvakkz wncn ne was
a little child. And then, a few
years ago, along came a Swiss
chemist - Dr. Hoffman - who
showed that if a man Is given
just a taste of a drug called
lysergic acid diethylamide, he
will - for some hours or a day
or two afterward - be psycho
tic, seeing visions, and losing
his sense of identity, like a
schizophrenic in a mental hos
ptal. Naturally, this discovery
was staggering to all open
minded psychiatrists.
Since then, chemists have
been finding one drug after
another - drugs with which
the research type of psychia
trist can produce a psychosis
at will. Just now I found an
article by Dr. Max Rinkel and
his colleagues, C. R. Atweli,
A. Di Mascio, and J. Brown,
in which they describe a re
markable new chemical called
psilocybine which, in tiny
doses, will quickly produce in
healthy volunteers most of
the symptoms of an Insane
person.
Obviously, the discovery of
all these drugs strongly sug
gests that, instead of psy
choses being produced by the
weird and improbuble, and
much-advertised ideas of the
psychoanalysts, they are be
ing produced by chemical
changes in the patient's body
or brain - changes that are
brought about perhaps by
hereditary defects in the body
chemistry - defects much like
those which produce diabetes
and gout and hardening of
the arteries.
Another fact that has stng-

One of my mentally distur

me that his psychoanalyst is

As I was writing this, I
picked up a review of a book
on Social Psychotherapy by
Drs. Jules Masserman and i.

words, quoted from the Pre

from theoretic fictions about
the private fantasies of th
isolated Individual to till
infinitely richer and more pro

that this most illuminating
sentence was written - not by
me, but by a couple of able
research psychiatrists. Some
vears from now all research
psychiatrists will be forced to
admit that the most profitable

heredity and tne cnemisiry oi

Why am I calling attention
to this collapse of the theore

psychiatry? Because I see so
much suffering produced by
analysts who keep saying to
