The government' invest
ment in price-s upported
wheat, corn, cotton, tobacco
and other SURPLUS larm
commodities totaled $9,026,
600,000 (nine billion, 26 mil
lion, 600 thousand dollars) on
Februray 29 of this year.
This was down more than
200 million from the previous
month, chiefly because of hea
vy sales of government-owned
cotton (the cotton was sold at
a loss, to get rid of it).
lyHEAT, long the govern
' ' ment's prime surplus bug
aboo, was the expensive item
at $3,384,522,428. The govern
ment owned 1,085,205,401 bu
shels of it, worth $2,843,971,
928. Loans on 303,037,161 bu
shels were valued at $540,
850,500. The corn investment
(surplus) amounted to $2,744,
376,495. The cotton Inventory was
5.816.923 bales, worth $1,-
018,875.694. No cotton loans
were reported because, under
the curent cotton program,
the government takes over
virtually all choice cotton.
WHAT is to say:
- The government holds in
its warehouses a little better
than NINE BILLION DOL
LARS worth of SURPLUS ag
ricultural crops - chiefly
wheat, corn, cotton and tobac
co, none of which are grown
to any extent in the State of
Jefferson.
Here's what it means:
As long as this IMMENSE
surplus remains in the hands
of the government - subject
to DUMPING at any moment
when a change in voting re
suited in a change of govern-
ment policy-it will hang like
a dark thundercloud over the
agricultural markets.
FARM surpluses aren't the
only surpluses.
For example:
You've heard of the "stra
tegic materials" stock piles.
The theory is that we should

ials - including copper, lead,
magnesium, tin, etc. - so that,
when comes war, we'll have
plenty of them on hand. It is
quite a logical theory, justas
logical as that In years of big
agricultural production w c
should stockpile surplus farm
crops for use when produc
tion slips.
BUT- .
The government stockpile
of these strategic and critical
materials has grown to the ra
ther sizeable total of 8.3 BIL
LION dollars worth. That's a
lot of strategic and critical
materials - especially with
the prospect facing us that in
the future war may change in
such a way that these old ma
terials will be much LESS
strategic.
And . . . over the world . . .
our old Uncle owns about 60
million acres of land which,
with the structures on it, is
valued on the books at 49.2
billion dollars.
The old gentleman is a
great collector, isn't he?
Three Arrested in
Portland Gunplay
Portland TOPI) Three men,
one of whom was wounded,
have been arrested in con
nection with gunplay at
northwest Portland tavern
Monday night.
Held under $3,000 bail were
John Lain Rainey, 28; Jack
Leon Sanders, 26, and David
Arran Smith, 27. Smith was
suffering from a bullet
wound.
Oliver Wirta, owner of the
tavern, told police ' a man
shoved a gun into his abdo
men and pulled the trigger
after an argument at the tav
ern. The gun misfired, he said.
He said another man had
jammed a pistol into a wom
an's handbag and that it fired
