Fowler was

ference on Children and
Youth. During his stay he call
ed on all of the Democratic
members of the Oregon con
gressional delegations, except
Sen. Hull H. Lusk, to see
where they stand in the up
coming primary.
He received no commit
ments of support, and at the
same time got the bad news
that two representatives
Edith Green and Charles O.
Porter - are planning to cam
paign in behalf of Mrs. Neu
berger.
fowler dispelled any no
tions that he might be
"Morse's man," as some ob
servers have suggested. He
said he doesn't expect support
from Sen. Wayne Morse, nor
does he expect to support
Morse's presidential bid in
the Oregon primary.
No Comment
"I think if you would ask
him, Sen. Morse would say
he won't support either candi
date," said Fowler. The Sen
ator has had "no comment" on
this and all political questions
involving his intentions since
the death of his former col
league. He has indicated, how
ever, that he will not cam
paign for Mrs. Neuberger.
In his first bid for major of
fice, the Cook county judge
plans a 15 minute television
program on a Portland sta
tion every Saturday night un
til the May 20 election in or
der to tell where he stands on
various issues.
"I don't know where she
stands on the issues," he said
of Mrs. Neuberger. "She will
have to tell the people that."
Probably a Liberal
Asked what sort of Demo
crat he regards himself, Fow
ler hesitated at length and
then, said, "I'd probably say
I'm a liberal." He said he fa-
fors the changes in the labor
reform bill advocated by
Morse, he's against right to
work laws, he favors the For-
and health insurance plan for
social security beneficiaries,
and he favors federal power
development of the Columbia
and Snake rivers.
As for the idea of a national
seashore park on the Oregon
coast, proposed by Sen. Neu
berger, Fowler said he's not
ready to make a definite state
ment for or against it.
"The issues the people are
most concerned about are
peace and juvenile delin
quency," said Fowler.
Asked whether reports were
true of Teamster backing, not
ably through Hugh Cole.
Teamstser official from Bend,
Fowler said he expected to
have lots of support but he
hadn't talked with Cole since
filing day. Concerning the
funds needed to put on a regu
lar television program, Fow
ler said simply:
"My friends have done very
well."

Energy Commission, demon
strating how peaceful atomic
research contributes to knowl
edge of plant functions.

vated by the party into equal
advisory status with Dean
Acheson, Mrs. Eleanor Roose
velt and other well kown fig
ures of the New and Fair
Deal.
Jebby Davidson has been
named chairman of a commit
tee on natural resources of the
Democratic Advisory Coun
cil. Other advisory committees
are on foreign policy, econo
mic policy, labor policy, sci
ence and technology, urban
and suburban problems, farm,
civil rights and social secur
ity matters.
This appointment In effect
elevates Davidson, a former
assistant secretary of the In
terior under Oscar Chapman,
to top status in the Democra
tic party in the natural re
sources field. His group is ex
pected to develop the main
theme for the party platform
In this field.

In response to Jesus' call
Simon Peter, James and John
"left everything and followed
Him."
The wonder of their re
sponse to Jesus' call is not
in its suddenness but In its
completeness; they left every
thing! Leaving everything has not
the slightest value in and of
itself. It is significant, only
because it shows the extent
of their devotion. Following
Him was worth any and ev
erything. Modern disciples of Jesus
will have to do the same. The
old must be left behind for
the sake of the new. The new
wine of the Christ directed
life cannot be put into the
old wineskins of the self-directed
life.
The leaving behind never
stopped for the disciples. It
was boats and nets at first;
later it was cherished ideas
and, finally, life itself.
But on the first day Jesus
asked only boats and nets.
One step at a time is all He
requires. The first step al
ways is the decision to do or
to be anything that God wants
you to do or to be.
The disciples made that de
cision. They backed it up by
leaving everything which in
terfered with their decision.
"Go and do thou likewise."
