Boats Will
Sail to SF
Giant Tilt

San Francisco (UPI) - The
first "baseball fleet" in history
will sail to the shores of Can
dlestick Park on April 12 for
the opening of the season: San
Francisco Giants vs. St. Louis
Cardinals.
While all highways leading
to the new 43,000-seat arena
will be clogged with thous
ands of cars, an armada of
35 to SO yachts will be anchor
ed In the basin adjacent to the
new Giants' home-unloading
hundreds of fans.
"We figure It will be the
easiest-and nicest-way to get
to the ball game," said Betty
scnpps, wno witn ner nus-1
band, E. w., will sail to the
game in their 53-foot yacht,
the 'Lazy Gal."
Leading the flotilla will be
Dan London, commodore of
the Great Golden Fleet of San
Francisco Chamber of Com
merce, in his "Adventuress."
Near Bay
Candlestick Park, the $15
million home created for the
Giants, is less than 100 yards
from the west shore of San
Francisco Bay. The anchoring
dock for the yachts will be
about 500 yards from the gate
to the stadium-not much far
ther than many of the cars
will be parked.
The Giants' front-office had
n't heard much about any
plans for the 'Invasion" from
the waters-and consequently
didn't make any arrange
ments for a reception. There
isn't even an official dock,
yet.
But the nearby Hunter's
Point naval shipyard is tem
porarily furnishing a floating
pontoon until the yacht clubs
get together and build more
docking space.

let by the parking lots and sea

Early (Gus) Wynn, the
American League's top win
ning pitcher of last season,
gave notice today that he's all
set for another big year that
will bring him close to the
magic figure of 300 victories.

ace righthander displayed
mid-season form in breezing
aeven shutout innings in a 2-0
victory over the Detroit Tig
ers Wednesday, just about as
easily as he breezed past his
39th birthday last January.
With 271 victories already
In the till, "hard rock" Wynn
is four triumphs ahead of Mil
waukee's Warren Spahn for
top honors among currently
active hurlers and he knows
that another big year will put !
him within arm's reach of i
that exclusive "300 club."
Only six modern hurlers
are members of that club and
they are all Hall of Fame im
mortals - Cy Young, Walter
Johnson, Christy Mathewson,
Grover Cleveland Alexander,
Eddie Plank and Lefty Grove.
Only three more wins will
put Wynn in the No. 7 slot
among modern pitchers, just
ahead of the 273 wins by
former Yankee star Charley
Ruffing.
Wynn, who complained of
a gout attack just last week
end, was a pain in the neck
for the Tigers as he scattered
four singles over his seven
innings. Two of the Detroit
hitters were quickly erased in
double plays.
Carroll Named
At Centennial

was named basketball coach
to succeed Ken Servas who
moves up to athletic director.
Dick Grant, now on the staff
at The Dalles Junior high,
was named head baseball

Lynn Curtis, a Portland
State football player, was
named wrestling coach, and
Bill Haller, who graduates
from Lewis and Clark in
June, will handle freshman
football and basketball.
