Selecting Correct Wood Panel
For Remodeling Is Important
An important Item in many
home building or remodeling
plans this year will be a wood
paneled room. Selecting the
"right" paneling from the
wide variety on display In the
lumber dealers show room
however, presents a major
problem.
Here are hints from the
United Stales Plywood Corpo.
ration for making your selec
tion:
Prefinishcd paneling has
many advantages. Finishing
your own paneling is not only
expensive and time-consuming,
but results are also uncer
tain. Easy To Maintain
Most finished panels are
easy to maintain with an oc
casional damp-clot h - w i p e -down,
and an Infrequent wax
ing. And, since finishes are
permanent, its initially higher
cost over paint-on-plaster or
wallpaper will more than pay
its own way during years to
come.
Prices for paneling vary
widely. Here are a number of
low-Driced "textured" woods
which cost as little as $38 for
12' by 8' wall. These woods,
from which the softer Spring
growth has been scoured out
of the grain, create three-di
mensional patterns with a
driftwood effect.
The average middle priced
range runs between $45 and
$65 for a 12' by 8' wall.
Higher Priced
Cherry, walnut and oak are
among the higher priced
woods with their traditional
popularity creating a compar
ative scarcity. The price
range, roughly, is $75 to ?Bu
for a 12' by 8' wall.
A major consideration in
selecting paneling should be
the use to which the room
will be put. For a children's
room, which will take hard
usage, one of the textured
woods - designed for hard
knocks - might be advisable.
For a master bedroom, pan
eling in one of the new deco
rator colors would be lovely.
For a formal living room re
flecting a feeling of substance,
it may pay to choose higher
priced oak or walnut, .
In selecting the variety of
wood, it is advisable to con
sider whether the room to be
paneled has plenty of light. If
natural lighting is bright, it
may be paneled with one of
the darker woods such as ma

hogany or walnut, if the room
is naturally dark, a lighter
wood may be indicated.
Same As Furnilur
If you will use furniture
you already own, make sure
the paneling does not clash.
It is often possible to install
paneling of the same wood as
your furniture.
If new furniture is to be
purchased, it may match or
complement the wood in the
paneling.
Many woods have overtones
of red, pink, yellow or brown
which may clash with pre
conceived color schemes. On
the other hand, it is now pos
sible to obtain the luxury, of a
fine hardwood grain tinted in
color around which a dec
orating scheme may be plan
ned. Several Panel Styles
There are several panel
styles from which to select.
V-Plank, with grooves cut in
to the face vertically to give
a random plank effect, is es
pecially good for large areas
and for somewhat informal
types of interiors. Colonial V
Plank gives a decidedly Early
American effect because of
the pegs Inserted above and
which are spaced like those
in old peg planks. The stand
ard panel, usually 4'x8' in di
mension, fits most applica
tions, formal or informal.
Wood paneled walls reflect
the warmth and prestige
which most of us prize so
highly in our surroundings.

'Growing Pains'
Can Be Solved in
Addition of Rooms
If your house has "growing
pains," or a new bedroom or
children's playroom is need
ed, it is wise to make a sur
vey of under-roof areas like
the attic, basement, breeze
way or garage for "Add-A-Room"
possibilities.
These ore first areas to be
considered since it's general
ly more economical to utilize
unused or little-used space
than to build an entirely new
addition.
If some under-roof area Is
available, chances are you
can get your new room at a
surprisingly low cost. The
amount of money needed will
depend, of course, on such
factors as the size of the new
room, the building materials
used, and the na-.ure of any
plumbing and heating installa
tions that may be required.
It is possible, in most areas,
to create an additional room
In the basement or attic for
as little as $400, or convert
a garage or enclose a porch or
breezeway for as little as $800.
If, moreover, such do-it-
your-self materials as easy-to-apply
gypsum wallboard are
used and you do the decorat
ing yourself, you'll be able to
achieve substantial savings.
Fireproof gypsum wall-
board is an ideal "add-a-room"
material ... it is easy to work
with, economical and takes
any type of decoration. The
board's tapered edge along
with reinforcing tape and
special adhesive used in the
Joint treatment are carefully
made to compliment each oth
er. Together they form a "sys
tem" designed to produce
joints that are invisible when
decorated and strong as the
board itself. No other wall
board system so effectively
produces the appearance of a
smooth seamless expanse.
At an early state, however,
a local buildii.g materials
dealer, a reliable contractor or
architect should be consulted.
All of these people are ex
perls, and regardless of how
much or how little of the work
you do yourself, they can give
valuable assistance in drawing
plans and offer suggestions as
to materials, as well as pro
vide advice on light and heat
ing problems.
Another reason for consult
ing a building materials deal
er is that he may be able to
advise you with regard to fi
nancing an "Add-A-Room"
project, or perhaps even ar
range for the remodeling loan
himself.

Walls Can Be Made
Into Musical Centers
You can have a ball with a
wall - especially if it's a mus
ical one.
Skyrocketing sales of mu
sical instruments, phono
graphs, tape recorders, re
cordings, "hi-fi" and stereo
equipment - all indicate
there's lots of music in the
home!

imagination, "music" can also
become the focal point in your
home decor plan.
If you're one of the 13-mil-lion
persons who own a piano
or an organ - you're off to a
good start! Place it in the cen
ter of the wall and build
around it.
Prefabricated
A series of prefabricated
cabinets on either side of the
piano will give continuity and
symmetry to the plan.
There are a vast number of
modern and traditional cabi
net styles from which to
choose.
With pre-fabs, you can add
to the music wall as your col
lection grows, and as space
permits.
Music walls are functional
as well as attractive - they
provide compact storage fa
cilities for all types of equip
ment, help preserve the life of
musical instruments and pro
vide a convenient center for
all musical activities.
Tape Recorders
It's easy also to provide the
specific space you need for
storing tape reels or record
ings, sheet music and other ac
cessories. Tape recorders and phono
graph equipment can be built
right into the cabinets; holes
can be cut in the 34-inch ply-S
wood for the speakers.
Overhead lights may be in
stalled above the piano niche
and the switches may be hid
den in one of the cabinets.
Indirect lighting may be in
stalled on top or behind the
cabinets. With modern rheo
stat switches, you may con
trol the brightness of room
light to fit the musical mood
desired.
Carpets, Rugs Play
Important Part in
Home Remodeling
In home remodeling or im
provement, a carpet or a rug
can do several important jobs
at once and should be consid
ered at the beginning of the
project.
If floors are In poor con
dition, wall-to-wall carpeting
may be the most economical
choice, since carpet can pro
vide a finished floor as well
as a decorative area of color
in a room. Good quality car
peting, installed with padding
which helps to fill in uneven
spots, can save the cost of
expensive floor refinishing.
On the other hand, if floors
are in good condition, a room
size rug would permit hand
some flooring to show and
would still provide softness
and warmth underfoot.
Unbroken Expanse
Consider an unbroken ex
panse of csrpeting if archi
tectural features of a room
are poor. Color and texture
on the floor can help make a
small room seem larger, or
can aid in "pulling together"
rooms or areas which are
broken up by jogs and cor
ners. If a room is a regular size
and shape-say, a large rectan
glea room-size rug will pro
vide a pleasing "decorative
frame" around the room.
Complete color schemes can
be built around the carpet or
rug, since the floor is the larg
est unbroken area of color
within a room. Paint, uphol
stery and drapery fabrics and
accent colors can all be chos
en to complement or harmon
ize with the floor.
Acoustical studies have
shown that carpeting can also
reduce impact noise by at least
50 per cent within a room
so this functional benefit of
keeping rooms quieter should
be considered in total planning.
