No Wonder We Like
Robins They Mean Spring
'The worm does hot enjoy
the robin's song" is a very
old proverb. Prooably the
worm is the only one that
doesn't, for the robin is prob
ably the most admired of any
American bird.
"I've just seen a robin," is
just about the most welcome
sentence one man can tell his
neighbor for. it's an indication
that spring is just around the
corner.
It is just a little sad to see
the first robin trying to find
something to eat while hop
ping around in a couple of
inches of snow. But the bird is
liot discouraged. It knows that
spring cannot be too long in
coming. It senses the fact that
soon the frost will be gone
from the ground and with the
drumming of early warm
rains the earthworms will be
working upward in the soil.-'
Once a Forest Bird
The robin was once a forest
bird, but seeing what Was
happening to the forests they
very .wisely made their peace
with industrialization and
mankind and moved iii. Now
they prefer to nest and raise
their young in close associa
tion with humans. When they
can they will nest on any pro
jection of the front or back
porch or in the plum or
cherry tree either in the front
of the back yard.
To show how very adapt
able they are, Mr. and Mrs.
Robin readily substitute other
than natural materials for the
nests. Usually, the nest is a
mud-cup lined with soft grass
es or feathers, with straw,
grass or rootlets interwoven
in the mud as a reinforce
ment. However, they have
been known to use iron shav
ings instead of grass or string.
In the deep mud-nest are laid
four or five greenish-blue un
marked eggs. The young rob
ins demand a steady and con
stant diet of worms, probably
eating their weight in these
materials every 24 hours.
They may raise as many as
three families during a sum
mer. No one can justifiably say
the fobin is a "squatter" of a
"sponger" The birds more
than pay their way in the
amount of harmful insects
they devour. As the short sum
mer nears its end and the
work of family raising is fin
ished, the robins forget the
hard work and gather in large
groups, flying back and forth,
feeding on late season worms
and insects.

During the summer and
early fall people have become
unmindful of the bird's pres
ence These same people hard
ly notice the departure of the
birds. Suddenly folks are sur
prised td find the robin is
