I hate to be writing so oft
en on cataracts, but I feel I
should because in my mail I
get so many
letters from
older persons
begging for in
formation on
this subject.
Usually, the
first big ques
tion is, should
the person try
some quack's
Or. Alvarez remedy to be
taken by mouth or some eye
drops he has read about some
where? The answer is "No";
there is only one treatment
for cataracts, and that is an
operation. The second ques
tion usually is, should one
cataract be removed when the
sight in the other eye is good?
As some persons write: they
saw four ophthalmologists
and three refused to operate,
saying it would do no good,
because after operation the
two eyes would not work to
gether (unless perhaps with
the help of a contact lens);
but one man was keen to
operate.
Whom should they believe?
wish they could read a
stack of letters I have receiv
ed from persons who had one
cataract removed, and now
are sorry because they cannot
read without perhaps cover
ing up one eye. Some eye
men operate as soon as sight
begins to fail definitely in the
good. eye. They do not fit a
lens in front of the operated
on eye until the person needs
to use that eye.
Another question from spry
old people of 80 is: "should
I insist on having the opera
tion? My children keep dis
couraging me, saying I am
too old." My answer is, "If
you are too blind to read, and
if you can find an eye spe
cialist who will operate, go
ahead. There is almost no
shock to a cataract operation.
It is done under local anes
thesia and it takes only a few
minutes. I am told that many
able eye -doctors are now
letting the patient get up soon
after the operation, and this
helps a lot.
Usually, when both eyes
have cataracts, the doctor op
erates on one eye at a time.
In most cases the result is
good; the person can read
again, or at least can get
about again. In cases of doubt,
the patient should talk to
three or four of the leading
eye men in his city. This is
cheaper than traveling about
to other cities.
Need for Electro
encephalograms Many a mother writes to
say that she is frantic over
the illness of a boy who is per
haps delinquent, or violent in
his rages, or unable to read
well, or unable to get along at
school, or who has curious
momentary "dumb spells," or
curious tizzies, or who is be
ing treated by a child psychia
trist. Some times the mother
is intelligent enough to say
that she wonders if the boy
has a "touch of epilepsy" such
as his Uncle Bill had, or she
wonders if his "orneriness" is
due to the brain fever he had
after an awful attack of
measles.
I agree entirely with the
mother, and I marvel at the
occasional psychiatrist who
will treat such a boy for
months or years without get
t i n g electroencephalograms

typical inherited epilepsy, or
that he has an area of inflam
mation in the brain. Then we
know that the psychiatrist has
been all wrong in blaming the
parents for doing something
or other to the child to make
him ill. The child is physically
as ill as if he had a broken
arm, and many doctors think
it utterly stupid to keep try
ing to talk him out of it at
$25 an hour!
The other day, as I sat at
luncheon with a distinguish
ed group of doctors in Wash
ington, D.C., I was so delight
ed to find that my host was
an old pupil of the great Wil
der Penfield, who recently re
tired as head of the great neu
rological Institute at McGill
University in Montreal, Can
ada. As much as anyone in
the world, Dr. Penfield has
shown us doctors that in many
cases the epileptic fit is a men
tal one. Often it arises in what
is called the temporal lobe at
one side of the brain. Some
times a brain surgeon can lo
cate it and remove it, and
thereby cure the patient. I
keep wondering why we doc
tors so sldom order electroen
cephalograms when they. can
so often tell us so much about
a patient.
Submarine Fires
Regulus Missile
Honolulu (DPD - The Hali

can nuclear submarine to fire
a guided missile from its deck
when it launched a Regulus I
missile Friday near Hawaii.
A Navy spokesman said
Monday the Regulus was guid
ed by four Navy chase planes
and landed at Bonham Naval
Air Facility on the island of
Kauai after a 15-minute flight
of 140 miles.
The Halibut fired its first
Regulus within four days
after reporting for operation
al duty with the Pacific Fleet.
The Halibut is the only nu
clear submarine equipped to
handle deck firings of Regulus
I and Regulus II missiles
while surfaced. Other nuclear
subs under construction are
being equipped to fire Polaris
type missiles from beneath
the surface.
