Two Tog ether
Live Cheaper
Than 1 and 1
Corvallis An unwary bach
elor may think he's being
trapped by the old saw "two
can live cheaper than one,"
but there's a grain of truth in
the statement, say Oregon
State college extension food
marketing specialists.
What they tell "singletons"
and families is ihat a young
married couple can eat for
less money per person than
two single Dersons livine
alone. In other words, the
"unit" cost, or ner nerson
cost lowers, but the total food
bill increases.
A U. S. department of ag
riculture survey of families in
the West shows that the aver
age cost of food for families
in the West shows that the av
erage cost of food for families
of four persons averaged
about $33.10 a week, compar
ed with a grocery bill of
$21.40 for a family of two.
On this basis, unit cost for
one member in the four-member
household was $8.28 com
pared t,o $10.70 a person in
the smaller family.
Regardless of family size,
meat, poultry, and fish took
by far the largest part of the
food dollar roughly a third
specialists continue., Fam
ilies with more members spent
a larger portion of their food
money for milk and dairy pro
ducts and for flour, cereals
and bakery products than
smaller families. Large fam
ilies also spent less for meat,
poultry and fish and for fresh
fruits and vegetables than the
smaller families.
Another reason that "unit"
cost per member is less in a
large family than in single
households is that unmarrieds
eat out more and are less like
ly to produce or preserve
foods at home.
