Bob Elliott Concedes ICC
Has No Title Potential;
Hopes for Fifth Place
(This is the mib in a
series of the 1960 prospects
of the major league clubs.)
By LEO H. PETERSEN
UPI Sports Editor
West Palm Beach, Fla. -DPD-Even
Bob Elliott, the newest
manager in the major leagues,
concedes his Kansas City Ath
letics have no pennant poten
tial. He's hoping to finish fifth.
"We aren't ready to take on
the big guys," Elliott said
frankly. And by the big guys
he meant the White Sox, In
dians. Yankees, and Tigers.
"We could beat the rest of
them,"he predicted, but not
with too much enthusiasm.
That's because he has infield
and pitching problems.
The key to his ball club, as
he sees it, is shortstop.
Elliott hopes rookie Ken
Hamlin can do the job and if
the 23-year-old Detroit native
can, the Athletics will be in a
much better position to make
that assault on fifth place.
Hamlin batted .251 with Co
lumbus of the International
League, hitting 10 homers and
driving in 69 runs.
Can Switch Lumpe
Should the youngster fail to
measure up, Elliott will have
to switch Jerry Lumpe from
second base to shortstop.
"I'd rather have Lumpe at
second because he prefers to
play there and I think that's
his best position," Elliott says.
"Whether or not he remains
on second at all depends on
Hamlin."
Lou Klimchock. who hit
.315 in 151 games with
Shreveport and .273 in 17
games with the A's last sea
son, is the leading candidate
at third base. If he can't hold
the job, Dick Williams, the
team's handy-man, probably
will wind up with it.
Marv Throneerry. a recent
addition from the Yankees,
has been hitting all kinds of
pitching this spring and has
just about clinched the first
base job although Bob Cerv,
attempting to make the con
version from the outfield, still
is putting in his bid. Williams
also can play first base, if
needed.
Wayne Terwilliger, who has
been around both leagues, and
Joe Morgan, who hit .315 at
Louisville last year, are the
infield reserves.
Outfield Well Fixed
The Athletics are well fixed
in the outfield with Norm Sie
bern tabbed for the left field
job, Bill Tuttle for the center
field assignment and veteran
Hank Bauer getting the first
call in right. Bauer is 37 but
looks 10 years younger this
spring, both in the field and
at bat.
Russ Snyder, who hit .313
for the A's last year, and
Whitey Herzog, who hit .293,
are the other outfield candi
dates. Elliott says he also may
keep rookie Leo Posada, a na
tive of Cuba who batted .301
at Shreveport.
The A's feel they have im
proved their catching with the
a
!;: 11 f
addition of Pete Daley from
the Red Sox and Hank Foiles
from the Pirates. Neither is
likely to beat out Harry Chiti
for the first string job, how
ever.. Chiti, hit .272 last year
while Daley and Foiles had
identical .225 marks. Among
the three, they batted in a
total of 40 runs.
Kansas City's biggest prob
lem last year was its pitching
and although it appears im
proved, it still is a long way
from being formidable.
Daley Top Pitcher
Knuckleballer Bud Daley,
who had a 16-13 record last
season, is the big man on the
staff. He'll be one of the
starters and the others proba
bly will be Ray Herbert 11-H,
Johnny Kucks 8-12 and Don
Larson, who had a 6-7 record
with the Yanks last season.
Bob Grim, used mostly in
relief last year, again will be
tried in a starting role. He had
a 6-10 record last season. El
liott may come up with an
other starter from among
John Tsitouris 4-3, Dick Hall,
who was 18-5 at Salt Lake
City, and Howard Reed, who
had a 9-7 record at Portland.
Veteran Ned Garver, 10-13
last year, will be used for
spot starting assignments. The
relief chores will be handled
by former Milwaukee pitcher
Bob Trowbridge, Tom Acker
and possibly Marty Kutyna,
who was 14-10 at Portland.
"I know we don't have the
nucleus of a pennant-winner,
but I'm confident we can
move up," Elliott says.
And he says it like he
means it, too.
