Prison Release
Finally Comes
For Marly Dallon
Cranston, R.I.(UPI) Horse
drawn carriages were tied "to
the wooden hitch rails along
the dusty streets.
Ladies held their long, bus

boardwalks as they hurried on
their way. Lunch was free in

This was the world of Mar
tin Dalton, the world he left
behind forever in 1897 when
the gray gates of Rhode Is
land State Prison closed be
hind him. Death finally pa
roled the 91-year-old lifer
Wednesday.
Given Ride 'Oulside'
When Marty Dalton had an
official chance for freedom in
1930 after serving 33 years for
the slaying of a New York
businessman, he first asked
for a ride "outside." The pri
son officials agreed. For two
hours he rode past the spots
he and Yankee Dan Sullivan e
once toured in their rather
wild youth.
Cars clogged the highways,
the old buildings were gone,
the men and women were
strangely dressed. Marty's
family in Fall River, Mass.,
was dead; he had no friends,
no money, no iob. md nn
home. The story goes that
Marty Dalton wept.
Asked To Return
Prison was Dalton's only
home and so he asked to b re
turned. From that dav mv h
went no further from th ori
son than a small garden patch
he maintained just outside te
walls. No other convkt in
Rhode Island history ever
spent no long behind bars.
Prison officials said Dalton
was well behaved. As h grew
older the only things Omt
mattered to him were tohacen
for his pipe, food and a place
to sleep, tie received no mail
in the past 31 years amj his
last visitor was in 1898.
Mind Years Away
He was pleasant with
guards and fellow inmates
but frequently forgot that
someone was talking to him.
His mind often seemed years
away, according to officials.
Dalton's troubles began in
1892 when he and Yankee
Dan, his best friend, spottet
Anthony S. Haswell, 66, a re
tired New York businessman
flashing a bankroll in an last
Providence saloon. They as
saulted and robbed Haswell,
who died soon afterward.
Yankee Dan was captured
and sent to prison, where he

escaped and fled to German
a or an unknown reason ne re

years later and was captured
in Atlanta, ia., wnere ne was
