F.P.A., Giant of
American Humor,
Taken by Death
New York-dTD-Franklin P.
Adams, one of the all-time
giants of American humor
whose wit and knowledge
dazzled two generations of
newspaper readers and radio
listeners, died Wednesday
night at the age of 78 in a
nursing home.
F.P.A.'s first column ap
peared in 1903 in the Chicago
Journal. He soon moved to
New York, startftd writing
"The Conning Tower", and
was widely syndicated into
the 1940s. His charter mem
bership in the "Information
Please" radio panel intro
duced him to another audi
ence in 1938.
He had entered the nursing
home in 1955, and though he
was visited often by such
friends as John Kiernan, Clif
ton Fadiman and Oscar Le
vant, he did no more writing
Avid Baseball Fan
Adams was equally at home
In poetry, prose, wisecracks
or literary criticism. He also
was an avid baseball fan a
Giant fan and his lament
over a famed Chicago Cubs
double play combination
probably will be remembered
as long as the game is played:
"These are the saddest of
possible words:
Tinker to Evers to Chance.
Trio of bear Cubs and
fleeter than birds,
Tinker to Evers to Chance.
Ruthlessly picking our gon
falon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a
double
Words that are heavy with
nothing but trouble:

Journalism's a Shrew
Adams left college after his
freshman year at the Univer
sity of Michigan and took a
job as an insurance salesman,
but he soon gave that up and
started writing. Of the new
career he wrote many years
lar:
"Journalism's a shrew and
scold I like her.
She makes you sick, she
makes you old I like her."
He was married and di
vorced twice. He leaves four
children by the second mar
riage: Anthony, Timothy, Per
sephone and Jonathan.
A funeral service will be
held Friday, and the body will
be cremated.
Six Mile Sea
Limit Proposed
Geneva (LTD The United
States formally proposed to
day that coastal states be giv
en a six mile territorial sea
limit and an additional six
mile fishing zone which they
would share with a limited
number of other nations.
U. S. Delegate Arthur Dean
presented the plan, which has
unofficial British support, at
the 84-nation Law of the Sea
conference as America's solu
tion for replacement of the
obsolete three-mile territorial
limit.
Dean said the outer-six mile
mile zone for fishing would
be shared with all nations
whose fishing fleets have had
"historical" access to it. He
defined such access as five
years continuous fishing im
mediately preceding Jan. 1,
1958.
Motherwell Jury
Debating Penalty
Downieville, Calif. (LTD -A
jury which convicted Larry
Lord Motherwell of first de
gree murder met again today
in an effort to break a dead
lock over what price he should
pay for the crime.
The jury of nine women
and three men completed its
second day of deliberations
Wednesday, and reported to
Judge Warren Steel that it
was divided 8-4 on whether
Motherwell should be execu
ted or spend life in prison.
There was no indication
what the majority favored.
If the jury fails to agree,
the judge has no choice but
to impose a sentence of life
in prison.
