270,000 men who make up a
unique fighting force cele
brate a birthday this week.
It is the 14th anniversary
of the Strategic Air Com
mand, widely heralded as the
Free World's most powerful
deterrent to aggression.
SAC was born March 21,
1946, at Boiling Air Force
Base near Washington, under
command of Gen. George C.
Kenney. Two plain-spoken
generals, Curtis E. Lemay and
Thomas S. Power, have suc
ceeded to the post of SAC
commander during the 14
years.
Six months after its activa
tion, SAC sent six B-29 air
craft to Europe for a tour of
the continent, as a "demon
stration of the command's
strength." This recollection
points up vividly the giant
steps taken by the command
in its 14 years.
Missiles Operational
Today, it is a missile com
mand as well as a far-striking
bomber force. Its interconti
nental ballistic missiles are
operational, ready for firing
within 15 minutes of an
enemy strike at the free
world.
Its bombers, still the back
bone of this awesome retali
atory force, are 100 per cent
jet powered. Its communica
tions system, mushrooming
over the world from the
famed red telephone in SAC's
underground headquarters, is
probably the world's most
complex.

ace 1948, took over the first
missile division at California's
Vandenberg AFB in January,
1958. The command was giv
en the. responsibility for de
veloping capability in ICBMs
and intermediate range mis
siles. In September of 1959, SAC
announced i t s missile men
were in business. The first
Atlas launching by an all
SAC crew at Vandenberg took
place and Power reported to
the nation that SAC's missiles
were operational.

Since then, SAC has an
nounced a mobile version of
the Minuteman missile, which
will be fired from a rail net
work set up to defy advance
detection of launching sites.
The command, at its tender
14 years of age, covers dozens
of bases in the United States
and man overseas.
Men Said Experts
Power likes to discuss one
particular aspect of SAC - its
men. Although many of the
270,000 men in the command
are in their early 20s, he says,
they are experts in a "fantas
tically complex system." And
they are not soon to be re
placed by technology.
"It should be evident that
man will retain his vital role
in this aero - space force,"
Power says, looking ahead to
an increasingly complex job
of protecting the free world.
The men who today cele
brate the 14th anniversary
know, too, that the race for
control of space is not mere
ly a contest for national pres
tige. Says Power, "Whether we
like it or not, it still is pri
marily a question of survival."
False Statement
Case Is Continued
The case of Fred Newton
Reed, 27, of Vale, and Rufino
Baragas, 30, of Nyssa, both
charged with making a false
statement in writing to pro
cure benefit, has been con
tinued in district court until
Friday.
They were arrested on the
charges by Medford city po
lice, after a cashier notified
them a man had tried to cash
an invalid check at a local
department store.
The two men had pleaded
guilty to the charge.
Reed told police he wrote
the check then gave it to
Lopez to cash. Police said
Reed is also wanted by the
Malheur county sheriff's of
fice on a charge of obtaining
money under false pretenses.

Cynthia S. - I am 26 and
working as a secretary to one
of the top executives of a
large firm.
My problem is a rather deli
cate one. My boss wife and I
have developed a close friend
ship within the past year. In
fact, she often takes me out
to lunch and tells me all her
troubles and she has intro
duced me to a very nice young
man.
It has been on my mind
for a long time to tell this
woman she is making life
harder for herself and her
husband by calling him at
the office a dozen times a
day to bother him with
trifles. If a child is ill she
sometimes asks him to come
homesetting our work back
several days. Then she com
plains bitterly about how late
he works.
My mother says I shouldn't
do it.
Mrs. L. S.-I know Cynthia
is a very tactful girl, but I
don't think this is something
she can carry off well. I have
met this man's wife socially
and I think she is a jealous
type. She will immediately
decide Cynthia is after her
husband.
I was a secretary in my
youth and I know that wives
are always a little uneasy
about pretty secretaries. I
have advised Cynthia to stay
out of this business and pass
the phone on to the boss as
soon as she hears his wife's
voice.
I also advised Cynthia not
to get too chummy with this
woman. I'm sure she tries to
talk intimately to Cynthia to
keep tabs on her. She'd turn
against her in a wink if she
could get anything on Cyn
thia. The Council: What intrigue!
What a melodrama! We're
afraid Mrs. L. S.'s romantic
imagination is running away
with her and Cynthia has be
come a half-conscious actress
in her mother's fantasy.

Yes, we suspect Mrs. L. S.
of having remote, unreal de
signs for Cynthia in an un
savory triangle. Cynthia, for
tunately, hasn't been sucked
in so deeply as to begin to
feel that she's in love with
her boss, but she has become
enough involved to cancel out
her good sense as a secre
tary. We agree it isn't Cynthia's
place to give advice to her
boss' wife and we also think
she ought to avoid receiving
too much personal informa
tion from her. We suspect that
Cynthia has overrated these
confidences out of a disguised
desire to place herself on a
competitive level with this
woman.
We do not' agree that
"wives are always a little un
easy about pretty secre
taries." Most have too much
sense and self-confidence for
that, and we don't think that
pretty secretaries have to
play a part to allay suspicions
-if, of course, there is-no rea
son for the suspicions.
We would, therefore, en
courage Cynthia to use her
common sense in handling
this problem. Her responsibil
ities as secretary include mak
ing the day run efficiently for
her boss. If his wife calls
when he is busy, it would not
be wrong for her to say so
and ask whether she can de
liver a message or take care
of some problem. If the wife
insists upon speaking to her
husband, Cynthia has no
choice but to accede to her
wishes. But if she uses the
right tone, she may be able
to save her boss hours and
headaches without treading
on toes.
