Air Force Drops
Kitchen Police
From Duty List
Washington - (UPD - The Air
Force sent every one of its
GIs a giant bonus Tuesday by
announcing it's eliminating
KP.
The service told Rep. Frank
Kowalski (D - Conn.) that
starting July 1 each Air Force
commander will be able to
hire a civilian contractor to
handle the chores of washing
dishes, peeling potatoes,
scrubbing garbage cans and
other such kitchen jobs.
To Hire Civilians
The contractors will hire
civilians to handle the kitchen
jobs at all permanent bases
which were previously han
dled by GIs. The order will
not effect KP duties in the
field, forward areas, or in
kitchens aboard Air Force
planes. In peacetime, most
GIs are at permanent bases
except when they are on
maneuvers.
Kowalski, West Point grad
uate and ex-Army colonel who
first disclosed military man
uals instructing GIs how to
wash dogs and act as offi
cers' servants, praised this
new directive.
He wrote Air Force Secre
tary Dudley Sharp, "it is sig
nificant that the Air Force
-youngest in years of "our
military services - should be
the first to break the tradi
tional KP barrier."
Kowalski hoped the other
services would follow suit.

Churches Said Concentrating
Power in Message Proclamation
By BISHOP
G. BROMLEY OXNAM
Of The Methodist Church
Washington, D.C.
Written for UPI
When the churches met in
the Second Assembly of the
World Council of Churches at
Evanston, 111., 120,000 Chris
tians assembled in Soldier
Field for a service of worship.
The world beheld the
churches visible in coopera
tion, the churches experienc
ing the corrective impact of
collective thinking. Quaker
learned from Orthodox, and
Orthodox from Methodist, and
Methodist from Anglican.
They practiced the military
principle of impulsion. Every
military move must have an
objective and is dependent
upon mass, that is, all that the
commander possesses men,
material, and morale. Impul
sion means multiplying mass
by concentrating upon a par
ticular section of the line.
Champlin Gives
Driving Advice
"Think for two-the other
driver and you-if you want
to stay safe in traffic."
With that advice, Medford
Chief of Police Charles P.
Champlin pointed out the re
lationship of defensive driv
ing to traffic safety.
He describes the defensive
driver as one who knows that
morally he must do all he
can to prevent accidents no
matter what the circum
stances may be. This means
he drives as skillfully as he
can, obeys all laws and does
whatever he can to compen
sate for unsafe acts of others.
Champlin stressed the im
portance of anticipating the
other fellow's errors. "Many
accidents could be avoided,"
he said, "if drivers would
keep a constant lookout for
the mistakes of others. In this
way they could spot danger
ous situations in time to do
something about them."
It is unfortunate, he said,
that there are more drivers
whose-main code of driving
seems to be not to give" the
other guy a break, than there
are defensive drivers.
With Oregon motor vehicle
registration at an all-time
high of more than 908,000,
defensive driving is more im
portant than ever, Champlin
said.
Wisconsin was settled most
ly by French explorers and
missionaries.

Churches are concentrating
their power in the proclama
tion of message, in the devel
opment of sound international
relations, a just social order,
brotherhood in racial areas.
During Lent, when millions
think anew of the signifi
cance of their membership
vows, Christians everywhere
realize that they belong to a
world-wide fellowship with
the centuries of history be
hind it-the manger, the up
per room, the cross; a future
with the ages before it Jesus
Christ is to become the ruler
of the kings of the earth and
His Kingdom shall know no
end; a fellowship that knows
no barrier of nation, of class,
of race. It is a fellowship in
which the member realizes
that he is not alone and will
never be alone again-"Lo, I
am with -you always;" a fel
lowship with a summons to
get right with brother before
one leaves gifts at altars; a
fellowship that demands that
we master the faith until it
masters us; a fellowship in
which we are called upon to
concentrate our talents and
find greatness in service it
self. In Lent, we are together;
and out of Lent will come a
practice that means we shall
be together through the ages
to come.

Carroll said. "Only the pro

their choice."
He called Stevenson a "man
