the Olympic play-offs at Den
ver March 31-April 2 - where
they will run into such season
ed performers as the Phillips
Oilers and others from the
AAU.
"We have three sophomores,
one junior and one senior on
our starting team," said the
youthful Taylor. "But we
might make up in condition
ing and fight for what we lack
in experience."
Worse Than Score
In whipping the favored
California team Saturday
night the sophomores showed
no lack of experience. The
final score was 75-55 but
really it was worse than that.
The Buckeyes poured 16
out of their first 17 field goal
attempts from the floor
through the hoop, took a 37
19 lead at the half time - and
that was it.
It was a staggering defeat
for the defending champions,
who Friday night defeated
Cincinnati "and Oscar Robert
son, 77-69, in what was con
sidered the "dream game" be
tween the top two teams in
the country.
California held Robertson
to just 18 points but he
bounced back with 32 Satur
day night as he led the Bear
cats to a 95-71 victory over
New York University in a bat
tle for third place.
Lucas Outstanding
The 56 sports writers who
covered the tournament were
so impressed that they: (1)
named Jerry Lucas, the giant
sophomore, as the outstanding
player of the tournament, he
got 49 of the 56 votes; and (2)
named all five starters from
the Ohio State team on the
first or second squads.
Named with Lucas on the
first team were Oscar Robert
son, Cincinnati; Darrall Im
hoff, California; Tom Sanders,
New York University, and Joe
Nowell, Ohio State. On the
second team were Bill Mc
Clintock and Tandy Gillis,
California; Paul Hogue, Cin
cinnati; and John Havlicek,
Joe Roberts and Larry Sieg
fried, Ohio State.

Ohio State's victory, accom
plished before 14,500 highly
partisan California fans, was
churned out in typical Cali
fornia fashion - with the de
fense the major key.
And Coach Taylor gave
credit to the victory to Cal's
Pete Newell the man he
termed the "out standing
coach in the country."
"I knew Pete had some de
fensive tactics that would help
me in the Mid-west," said
Taylor.
"So I went to a clinic where
he was appearing and got
some of his secrets. This help
ed our team immensely."
Lucas was the leading scor
er with 16 points - but all
four of the other starters were
in double figures, too.
