The Family Council
Editor's Note: The Family Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist,
three clergymen, a newspaper editor a women's editor and two writers
Each article is a summary of an actual -a.se history The Council reports
on problems that have been dealt wi b by responsible agencies and
counsel.
Mrs. L. L. I'm worried
about my daughter's morals.
Illem L. Mother is a prude
and tn eavesdropper.
Mrs. L. L. I listened in on
a gab fest between my 16-
year-old daughter and some
of her friends the other day
and I almost got a heart at
tack.
The girls were talking about
sex and some of the stuff
they had read in books and I
couldn't believe the things I
was hearing. I've been mar
ried 20 years and have three
children, but some of the
things they talked about were
news to me.
That was bad enough, but
when my daughter piped up
. and said sex was normal and
1 natural and she wasn't mar
ried by 21 she was going to
have , relationship without
benefit of clergy, I felt it was
time to break up. the party.
I walked into the room and
told the girls I had never
heard anything so sickening in
my life and I never wanted to
hear such talk in my home.
I am jso worried about my
daughter.
Ellen L. It's bad enough
to have a mother who js a
prude, but when she acts like
a sneak and eavesdropper as
well, that's too much! I was
never so ashamed in all my
life not because of what I
said but because of the way
Mother acted.
Mother must have had her
ear glued to the door for half
an hour to have heard the
things she claimed she did.
We were talking in whispers
and nobody could have heard
us without trying real hard.
Anyway, I don't see any
harm in talking about sex. All
the girls do it. Personally, I'd
never know a thing it it was
not for my friends. Mother
hardly told me anything. A
lot of the girls laughed at
me when I said certain things.
They said I probably still be
lieve in the stork. What I said
about what I would do if I
don't get married young was
just talk.
The Council: We are very
much opposed to all forms of
spying in family life. The
spying parent degrades him
self and causes great harm by
tearing down the fabric of
the child's respect. Whatever
information he can glean isn't
worth the price.
We do not believe it is
necessary to spy, eavesdrop,
open letters or intercept tele
phone conversations to know
what is going on with a child.
A teen age boy or girl re
veals much in gestures, facial

expressions and casual con
versation. The tactful parent
will try to create an atmos
phere of friendliness and trust
so that the child will feel free
to talk up or ask questions
when the time is right.
We get the impression that
Ellen and her friends were
enjoying a torrid bull session
and the things discussed don't
necessarily reflect much of
their real attitudes. Ellen's
elaborate proclamation was
probably nine-tenths showing
off and one-tenth trying on
the idea to hear how it sounds.
At 16, age 21 sounds far
enough away to be entirely
unreal.
We don't mean to pooh-pooh
this episode out of existence.
It is certainly important for
adolescent girls and boys to
be able to put some of their
factual knowledge about sex
in its proper perspective. Mrs.
L. L. should do something
about giving her daugher the
right standards and the right
information. She will never
be able to do this, however,
if she heaps abuse on the
girl on the basis of the things
she heard eavesdropping.
