McArthur Court, University
of Oregon, Eugene - A fright
ened Medford High school
basketball contingent, in one
of its rare experiences this
season under pressure, col
lected its poise and fought up
hill through the second half
to burst into the Saturday
night finals here for the Ore
gon Class A-l prep diadem.
Outplayed, outrun and out
shot for half the conflict Fri
day night, the Black Tornado
blazed back to outscore South
Salem 34 to 20 over the last
two stanzas and nudge the
valiant Saxons 56 to 52 in a
state semifinal scrap.
It was the Tornado's 20th
straight victory of the 1959-60
maplecourt promenade and
sent the Medford hoopmen
into a titanic titular struggle
with Marshfield of Coos Bay.
The Golden Pirates outlasted
Klamath Falls in the first of
two Friday night adrenalin
chargers 57 to 55 to reach the
championship mix.
Southwest Gets Crown
Semifinal outcomes spoiled
hopes for an all-Southern Ore

But, South Salem's cagers,
a fiery tournament team,
showed little, if any, respect
for the No. 1 rating accorded
Medford. Spurred offensively
by Jay Brack and Charles
Hudkins and defensively by
the fierce play of Ed Maerz,
John King and Hudkins under
the backboards, the Saxons
had the Tornado 10 points
down 32 to 22 when the half
time buzzer blasted.
Then Jerry Anderson, Ken

climb. Anderson, held to three
points by Salem's stiff under-
the-hoop defense, rang in 12
counters in the second half
for Coach Frank Roelandt's
Tornado team. Durkee con
tributed seven markers and
Quinney five. Cal Dean and
Deakins came off the bench to
help steady Tornado skirmish
ing in the clutch.
Quinney Gets Lead
Medford headed 16 to 14
after one quarter of the game
but fell behind at 19 to 20
some 23A minutes into the sec
ond stanza. They did not go
ahead until the final panel.
Quinney put the Medfords in
front for good at 50 to 48. His
driving baseline bucket pop
ped in with 3 minutes 9 sec
onds left to play.
Outpointing the Saxons 17
to 9 in the third session, the
Tornadoes lagged Salem just
39 to 43 going into the closing
chukker. The Pear city stal
warts tied the score twice and
fell behind on two occasions
before going on top to stay.
Anderson tallied on a feed
in shot and then put in two
gifters for 43-all with 6:48 left
on the clock. Hudkins hit
from the circle to restore the
South lead and Maerz added
a free shot for 46 to 43. Quin
ney sank two free tosses but
King did the same for the
Capitol community kids for
South margin of 48 to 45.
Next Coach Dick Ballan-
tyne's Saxons suffered a rug
ged blow. Maerz, rebounding
ace and a major factor in
stopping Medford's Anderson
and Quinney in the gang ups
under the hoop, fouled out.
There was 4:16 to go as Shults
put in the free toss on the
foul. Quinney drove in for a
basket off a Cal Dean feed for
48-each with 3:52 remaining.
Shults Widens Gap
Tall Bob followed up with
the marker that put Medford
in front and with two minutes
on the clock Shults plunked a
20-foot jumper. But South
was still in contention as King
made two free tallies. These
were offset by Cal Dean's
pair with 45 seconds on the
clock. King intercepted a
Medford pass and hit from
close range for 54 to 52, Med
ford with a half -minute to .go.
Eight seconds showed when
Anderson slipped along the
baseline and looped the ball
in for a clincher.
Time ran out and as the
buzzer sounded jubilant Med
ford cagers danced and hug
ged each other and cheerlead
ers gathered round to join in
the joyous moment.
Hudkins was the scrap's
top point man with 20 and
Brack totaled 17. Anderson
put in 15 counters, Durkee
added 11. Quinney 10 and
Shults nine. Quinney control
led 12 rebounds from the
boards while Anderson and
Shults each gathered nine.
Maerz had 10, King nine and
Hudkins seven.
Medford, despite poorer
shooting a v e r a g e, .317 to
South's . .352, had one more
field goal for the night and
put in two more free points.
Saxon .trouble making free
heaves go in proved costly in

Shults leaps high in the air to score two

the range from outside and
the ganging defense of the
Saxons in the inside area. At
the same time Salems were
waxing hot, getting good posi
tion or tipping the ball for
rebounds and then beating the
Tornado at its running game.
Medford got its share of steals
and interceptions but could
not press them to the first
half advantage that the Sax
ons did.
Still in grabbing victory
after viewing the brink of de
feat, the Tornadoes, one of the
finest teams in Medford high
history, flashed the comeback
quality which is the mark of
a championship contending
club. The hard earned tri
umph after two easy games,
however, gave rise to specula
tion as to its effect on Med
ford for Saturday's title-deciding
tangle.
The Tornado In the semi
fell behind after once holding
16 to 11 advantage. It nabbed
first quarter lead when Shults
scored at close range on a
Ragsdale feed for 10 to 8. A
Durkee tally after a Shults
swipe, a Lowell Dean pusher
and a Durkee longie, while
Maerz hit from the foul mark
ana ttuaKins dunked a re
bound, resulted in the five-
point difference. A Brack
charity heave and Dan Wells
push made it a 16 to 14 quar
ter.
South Goes Ahead
Brack's jumper gave South
its 20 to 19 lead. Hudkins'
long push and two free count
ers, Maerz' gift throw and
Brack's pusher made a 28 to
19 score. Shults' driver and
Anderson's charity shot cut it
to 28 to 22 but Hudkins and
Brack each goaled to estab
lish the half time count.
In three minutes of the third
session, Medford reduced its
trailing margin to five points
at 33 to 28. Durkee got a
brace of field goals and An
derson and Durkee free points
while Brack hit just a single
ton for South. Brack and
Deakins exchanged baskets,
then Hudkins flicked the net
for 37 to 30. Lowell Dean's
free shot and Anderson's pair
of buckets hacked the gap to
37 to 35.
Hudkins pushed a shot from
the circle but Anderson and
Deakins made it up at the
free stripe. Salem then upped
the spread to six on Ed Swear
inger's driver and Hudkins
jump from the corner. Durkee
free tosses made it 43 to 39 at
the pause.
Seven Times In Finals
Medford advanced into' the
state basketball tourney finals
for the third time in six years
and became a seventh time
finalist. In 1955 the Tornado,
bowed to Eugene in the finale
and in 1956 it lost to Franklin '
of Portland. 'In each of those i
former tussles, the Medford,
opposition was bolstered by a
giant player. Saturday night
the Tornado had to face
another skyscraping eager in
Marshfield's 6-10 Mel Counts.
The 1960 championship en
gagement matched Medford
and the Coos Bay school for
the second time this season.
In December non-league play
Medford lost to Marshfield
66 to 58. It was the Tornado's
season opener.
In its Friday semi the
Marshfielders had to go the
last four plus minutes with
out the services of Counts. He
fouled out with the Pirates
leading 49 to 42. The Klam
ath Pelicans then proceeded to
catch up in the evenings first
feature of a double thriller
program. Dean Dunson, Bruce
Brickner and Paul Bishop got
field goals and Bishop two
free casts while Bob Buries
gained a single gift heave for
the Pirates. That made it 50
each with less than 2A min
utes to play.
Counts Has 24
A Buries bucket and gifter
then gave the Bucs 53 to 50
edge. Gary Patzke got a free
toss for KF but Dick Shanley
fast broke for a Coos Bay
goal. Shanley followed up
with double success at the gift
stripe for 57 to 51 with l1
minutes left. Dunson goaled
for Klamath in the final sec
onds and Brickner netted the
ball at the buzzer.
Counts did plenty to help
the Bucs before he retired
with 24 points and 23 re
bounds. Paul Bishop had 20
KF points and Brickner 14
board retrieves.
Marshfield won out at the
rree line witn 21 points on
27 tries while Klamath made
17 of 26. The Pelicans had
one more field goal, 19 to
Coos Bay's 18 and the better
gunning record, .297 to .286.
On the scoreboard the two
teams seldom were far apart
and 23 to 15 was Marshfield's
biggest spread. Quarter stand
ings all favored Marshfield
15 to 13, 29 to 28 and 41 to 40.
Forewarned
KF put in the first goal of
the scrape but did not have a
lead again until the third
period. The Pels went on top
at 30 to 29 and once were
36 to 32. Marshfield tied at
36-all and a 38-all knot fol
lowed. '
Medford, which drubbed
Jesuit 75 to 41 on Wednesday
and St. Helens 80 to 51 in a
Thursday mix had plenty of
warning that South Salem
could not be taken lightly.
The Saxons knocked out Port
land's Jefferson 64 to 52 in
the opening round with a siz
zling scoring pace. Then they
fought from behind to bop
South Eugene, a club which
in pre-Ieague play had pushed
them over twice.
Marsh field beat David
Douglas 59 to 54 and Cleve
land 49 to 43 before facing
Klamath. "

Falls met last night for third
place.
