A Pretty Nice Fellow
Few folks would admit it,
but the common barnyard
rooster is a creature of deep
tolerance and understanding.
He's a stickler for justice and
fairplay. He really deserves
more respect and acclaim than
he has ever been extended.
None of his kind ever
achieved any great fame, be
cause any individual rooster
that developed a pronounced
degree of aggressiveness had
his head chopped off before
he could display his intelli
gence. Another, a lesser roost
er, was substituted.
Yet, the truth is any roost
er in charge of a flock is a
pretty unbiased and unpre
judiced individual. Just be
cause one hen may be a little
less attractive to him than one

criminate. He treats them all
alike. He maintains harmony
and order in a many-sided so
ciety that appears as explo
sive as dynamite. He must
possess the wisdom of Solor
mon and the chivalry of Sir
Walter Raleigh to rule suc
cessfully over a harem con
taining half a hundred wives,
each with a character and a
personality all her own.
Shares Food
Above all, he is unselfish.
He is as generous with his
food as he is with his affec
tions. Many times each day he
calls the entire flock together
to share a worm or a few
grains of seed or a crust of
bread he has discovered. He
knows, too, that when he calls
them they will all rush in
like shoppers at a bargain
sale and gobble the food. But
he never gets discouraged; he
repeats the "food call" every
time.
In the case of a young, in
experienced hen he will show
her just where to dig with
the best prospects for resu;j.
If, after following his advice,
she really does uncover some
thing in the way of food, he
will call the whole flock to
come and help it. If they all
rush in and gobble the food
he will strut away. It was
net his fault there was hardly
enough.
Calms Flock
If a hen becomes frustrated
or hysterical at the sight of
a soaring hawk overhead, the
wise rooster will philosophic
ally accept her fright with a
haughty disdain, and by his
nonchalant ' coolness assure
the flock that their lord and
master is still in complete
control of the situation.
When he crows early in the
morning, he is displaying his
exuberance and notifying the
flock, as well as the entire
countryside, that a new day
has come, and it is time to get
up and "get with it."
As soon as the clarion call
has gone out, he begins strut
ting his stuff, inspecting per
sonally every food-find, and
making decisions for the good
of the flock. Of course he is
full of pep, as fresh as a
daisy. Why shouldn't he be
he "went to bed last night
with the chickens."
