union in spirit which brings
all of us together in love of
Ireland and affectionate re
tard for one another. The
w rldwide celebration in
honor of St. Patrick is proof,
if groof were needed, of the
funlamental national unity
of fht Irish pe pie and of Ire-

Politically, our fundamental

will ultimately be achieved.
Mennhile, we desire, and
&r endeavoring to promote,
prtcticil cooperation in the
economic sphere with our

Culturally, we are continu

our people, a sense of pride
in our heritage from the past
and an effective desire to de
velop that heritage in the future.
We hope to have available,
in a short time, the results of
a special investigation, which
has been in progress, of the
methods by which our aim
concerning the Irish language
can best be secured.
Can Look Forward
If, as we hope and pray, the
peace of the world is main
tained -as the people of all
countries so ardently desire -we
in Ireland feel that we
can look forward with confi
dence to the future and that,
as the years go by, the kins
men and friends who visit our
shores will find a constant
growth in useful activity and
continuous progress towards
the achievement of the na

St. Patrick May
Have Been First
Irish Archeologist
Washington (Science Serv-ice)-St.
Patrick, patron saint
of the Irish, may have been
Ireland's first archeologist.
Legend has it that the saint
once came upon a huge grave
120 feet long and had it op
ened. He then was reported to
have done something every
archeologist no doubt yearns
to do-brought the dead man
entombed there back to life
for a brief interview.
St. Patrick learned that the
dead man's name was Cass,
and that he was a king's
swineherd who had been kill
ed by soldiers 100 years ear
lier. Concern of Missionary
Leg end notwithstanding,
what St. Patrick actually op
ened was probably one of Ire'
land's Long Barrows mounds
of earth that pre- historic
people were accustomed to
heap over graves,
v In the tale, St. Patrick's
concern with the mound's oc
cupant was that of a mission
ary, bent on baptizing any
pagan. But, because he did
take an interest in the Long
Barrow and its age he did
have a hand in Ireland's arch
eological past.
Modern archeologists are
learning about the builders of
these ancient mounds by ard
uous, painstaking examination
of the composition and con
tents. The builders probably
migrated to the British Isles
about 3500 B. C, bringing a
Stone Age culture.
