Reward Offered
For Mail Thieves
Chicago-(UPO-A $12,000 re-i
ward was offered today for
three mail thieves who shot
and killed two undercover
postal investigators.
The Post Office Department
announced the reward in
thousands of circulars distrib
uted on the city's near south
side where the investigators,
John McAuliffe, 36, and Bene
detto Spizzirri, 42, were kill
ed Monday night.
Jereme Williamson, chief
postal inspector for the Chi
cago area, launched the big
gest, federal manhunt in the
city's history by throwing 700
government agents into the
search for the killers.
Several suspects were ar
rested but all had alibis and
were cleared of involvement
In the shooting.
The investigators were be
lieved to have caught the
three thieves taking mail bags
from Chicago's La Salle st.
station. McAuliffe and Spiz
zirri made their fatal mistake
when they frisked the men
but failed to find a hidden
pistol.
Rockefeller Holds
Nixon Support

back an endorsement of Rich
ard M. Nixon's presidential
candidtcy but agreed to take
an active part in the GOP
national campaign.

dorsing "any individual" for
the presidency. But, he said
he might campaign for Re
publican candidates in other
states.
The New York governor
aid his first appearance
would be in North Dakota
where Gov. John E. Davis is
opposing Democratic Rep.
Quentin Burdick in a special
U. senatorial race.
Asked for comment on
Washington reports that he
tvould actively campaign for
ixon. Rockefeller replied:

Separate Trial for
Carole To Be Asked

der trial of the accused lov
ers, but Attorney Robert A.
Neeb Jr., said he will oppose
having Carole again tried
with the 42-year-old physician.
The couple went through a
drama - packed, three - month
trial which ended in a mis
trial Saturday when their
jury deadlocked, voting 8-4 to
free Carole and 10-2 to con
vict Finch of the July 18 gun
shot slaying of Finch's wife.
Neeb said he also would
present a formal motion to
have Carole freed on bail
pending her second trial.
Council on Aging
To Meet Thursday
. The Rogue Valley Council
on Aging will hold its regu
lar meeting at 3 p.m. Thurs
day. March 17, in the Senior
Activity Center on Jackson st.,
Uedford.
Future plans of the council
vere discussed last week at a
meeting of the recently elect
ed executive committee.
Frank Glonning, chairman
of the executive committee,
named a committee to initiate
inquiry into possibilities of ob
taining a Ford Foundation
grant for community research
in problems of the elderly.
Grants will be awarded to
eight communities in the coun
try which will be selected
from applicants by a screen
ing committee headed by Miss
OUie Randall, vice chairman
of the national committee on
aging.
Another committee appoint
ed by Glonning will consider
plans for the future of the
Senior Center.
