term as president.
Rhee was unopposed for re
election, and the only way he
could lose was by polling less
than a third of the vote cast
in the contested vice-presidential
election.
The candidates for vice
presidents were Lee Ki Poog,
Rhee's 63-year-old running
mate, and John M. Chang, the
61-year-old incumbent nomin
ated by the opposition Dem
ocratic party. Chang defeated
Lee by about 200,000 votes in
the 1956 election.

Crataegus - Hawthorne -"Strength,"
alluding to the
wood.
Hawthorns, almost without
number, are found wild in
America. Some of the most
eminent botanists have made
a study of them and are still
bewildered. Only a few of the
most outstanding ones are
mentioned. Rehder says there
are 800 known species in
North America and 90 in the
Old World. In the Arnold
Arboretum 600 kinds are
growing.
"Haws" are usually spiny
branched, alternate leaves,
various in shape. The flowers
are white, produced in
corymbs, rarely solitary;
sometimes delightfully fra
grant, but more often of
strong odor, reminding one of
the fishing smacks of Massa
chusetts. Fruits of some
species are edible, and are
like small apples.
The Washington Hawthorn,
Crataegus cordata (phaeno
pyrum), is native from Vir
ginia to Alabama and Mis
souri, and grows to 30 feet
tall. The foliage is dense and
forms a round head. The slen
der spines are 3 inches long.
The large corymbs do not
form till late in the season.
The broad triangular leaves
are 1 to 3 inches long and
pointed, blunt, or even slight
ly notched at the tip. They
are 3 to 5 lobed and sharply
toothed. During the summer
they are lustrous, turning
scarlet or orange in the fall.
Hope for End of
Actor Strike Held
Hollywood-(UPD-High hopes
for a quick end to the actors'
strike prevailed today when it
was indicated the Screen Ac
tors Guild might allow major
studios to resume production
on eight films halted by the
strike.
While representatives of the
14,000-member SAG and the
seven struck studios return to
the bargaining table in the
afternoon, a guild spokesman
said it was "not impossible"
the Guild would sanction com
pletion of the partially finish
ed pictures.

on the pictures as soon as
SAG is convinced the studios
are negotiating in "good
faith," the spokesman said.
