New Drug Helps
Mental Patients
Chicago - (Science Service)
-Mental patients formerly
considered hopeless are now
able to fight their illness with
the aid of the drug LSD-25,
two psychiatrists said here.
Drs. Arthur L. Chandler
and Mortimer A. Hartman of
the Psychiatric Institute of
Beverly Hills, Calif., reported
on the use of the drug, lyser
gic acid diethylamide, in 110
patients.
With LSD-25 as an aid, it
has been possible to "reach"
and work with patients who
are otherwise unresponsive to
psychotherapy. Several pa
tients had had as much as six
years of previous analytic
therapy with no success. After
20 to 40 LSD-25 sessions, they
were either discharged as
markedly improved or appear
ed to be well on their way to
the resolution of their basic
problems, the psychiatrists
said.
Matador Missile
Crash in Formosa
Strait Reported
Taipei, Formosa - (UPD - A
U.S. Matador guided missile
veered off course in a test fir
ing in January and crashed
into the Formosa Strait be
tween Nationalist and Com
munist China, a U.S. military
spokesman said today.
The spokesman made the
statement in response to a
question from United Press
International.
He said the six-ton Martin
missile crashed before it came
close to the Communist-held
mainland.
Accusations Issued
Although such test missiles
are not armed, Red China was
considered certain to make
much propaganda over the
mishap. Peiping issued a tor
rent of accusations and warn
ings about American "hostile"
intentions toward Red China
when the Matadors were in
stalled. The Communists also did
not have to worry about los
ing face or having to retaliate
which might have been the
case had the missile reached
the mainland. But the crash
site was not close enough for
propaganda purposes.
Pilotless Jet
The Matador is a winged
guided missile . actually a
pilotless jet dive bomber -with
an operational range of
more than 500 miles.
It is the largest missile
guarding Formosa and can
hop the 100-mile Formosa
Strait and fly deep into Red
China.
