' Ginkgo (triloba) - Maidenhair-tree.
The Ginkgo (Gink'-go). is
bee of the most primitive of
our trees, and botanically it
ranges beneath the flowering,
and even beneath the conifers.
In appearance the Ginkgo is
perhaps the most Japanesque,
the leaves being fan-shaped.
The Ginkgo, like the Meta
sequoia glyptostroboides, was
apparently carried over from
a previous age in Australia
and China - pehaps in Japan.
Both trees were, and maybe in
places are yet, recognized as a
shrine.
The Ginkgo usually grows
with a single trunk to a height
of 120 feet. The bark is ashy
gray, branches nearly parallel,
twigs are yellowish-brown and
smooth. The bark on twigs
separates in shreds. The fan
haped leaves are alternate, in
clusters of 3 to 5 on spurs, and
2 to 3VS inches across and
more or less incised, and turn
- yellow in fall. This tree is in
different to heavy or light soil,
and transplants easily.
Male trees only should be
planted, because the fruit is
obvoid, yellowish and ill-smel-ing,
due to fatty acid called
ginkgoic acid.
A beautiful specimen of the
Ginkgo is in yard near the
northwest corner of the house
at 122 Oregon Terrace, end of
Queen Ann st. This tree is 50
to 60 years old. A younger
tree is in the yard at Park
View Home, 906 West Main
st., one in the parking strip
a 820 West Fourth st. There
are a few others in Medford.
Ginkgos are for Havana and
Sutter streets, 70 to 80 . feet
apart.
