Student Grades in
College, High
School Compared
Corvallis For the past six
years, the registrar at Oregon
State college has charted the
classroom performance of new
freshmen and compared that
record against high school
grades.
The study made by Dr. D. T.
Ordeman shows "startling in
dividual variations in per
formance." On the average, college
grades made by individual
students are slightly m6re
than One-half a grade point,
Or letter, lower than those
made in high school. Students
who had a B average in high
school, for example, make
about a B minus or C plus
average during their first year
of college, Ordeman found.
Averages "go out the win
dow" in many cases, however,
Ordeman noted.- This fall
term, 323 of the 1,935 new
freshman had grades that
were better than their high
school averages. Some of the
323 made remarkable gains,
boosting their averages by a
fullgrade point or letter over
their high school record.
Grades Go Down
The other 1,612 freshmen
saw their college grades go
down from those of high
school. In ,ome cases, stu
dents who lad fine records
in high schooAwent on proba
tion their firs term at OSC
because their virades fell be
low the required C. average.
Some of the udents may
have made gooc grades so
easily in high schoSl that they
never really learned how to
study, Dr. Ordeman believes.
Others simply used their free
time in college for things be
sides studies. Determination
and hard work will always be
important factors in classroom
performance, he pointed ftut,
along with "brains."
In the fall of 1958, the av
erage freshman who camii to
OSC had high school mirks
that average just a fraction
above B, Ordeman said. Half
of them had ranked in the
upper per cent of their grad
uating classes. To enter OSC,
Oregon high school graduates
must have at least a C . av
erage. Out-of-state students
must rank in the upper half
of their graduating class.
