Sweet gum (Liquidambar
styraciflua) is a pyramidal,
symmetrical, tall and straight
tree, mostly a native of the
southeastern states. The red
brown, stout branches are
son etimes corky-ridged. The
pointed buds are shiny red
dish - brown and fragrant
when crushed. The leaves are
somewhat star-shaped, heart
shaped at the base, 4 to 7 inch
es long and broad. They are
5 to 7 lobed, finely toothed
and lustrous, sometimes mis
taken for maple or sycamore
leaves. Autumn colorings are
wonderful brownish- yellow
red, scarlet, some, bluish
black, and shiny. This must
be seen to be appreciated.
Two nice specimens of this
tree are near the northeast
area of the county courthouse
yard, and a row of younger
trees are south of the court
house. Watch them grow!
Sparing water in early fall
produces more vivid leaf
coloring. Trees should be
transplanted in the spring
and severely pruned, which
insures chances of survival.
It does best on deep soil, in
full sunlight.
The sweet gum should be
used more where it can be
given ample space. Streets
where used are: Black Oak,
