with married men.
Harriet S. - She has r small
town attitude. - -" .
Nora B. - I am a happily
married woman, motherof
three young children. I am
worried about my single sis
ter, who is a successful career
woman in her early 30s.
Recently I spent a week
with Harriet and I must con
f ess I ' was pretty shocked
about a lot of things. I know
that Harriet is a fine person
and no home-wrecker, but she
has a few married men friends
and thinks nothing of having
dinner with them and going
out for the evening.
I don't know what the wives
of these men think. All I
know is I would be furious
and wouldn't stand for it - if
I knew about it. Harriet says
it's purely platonic and I'm
sure she wouldn't lie to me,
but I worry about her reputa
tion. Harriet S. - My naive little
sister doesn't realize that
there is no such thing as repu
tation in the city. Nobody
knows or cares who I go out
with. Occasionally when we
are out, I may meet somebody
who knows both me and my
date, but that person could
easily think we have a busi
ness engagement. In any case
it's none of anyone's business.
My attitude is that I go out
with married men purely out
of friendship. I certainly don't
want to wreck anyone's home
and the men I go out with
understand that.
The fact is I find married
men more interesting than
most bachelors. Married men
are usually more relaxed and
help me relax and enjoy my
self. My sister is taking this
in a typically small town way.

The Council: We'll take
Harriet's statement at face
value and assume she is tell
ing the truth about her moti
vation. Nonetheless, she is making
a big mistake on two scores.
First, she overestimates the
effects of. geography. on
people's mind. A sophisticated
city dweller wouldn't be
caught dead raising an eye
brow at things that might
v leave a small towner gasping,
but that doesn't mean he does
not think or gossip in a
sophisticated urban manner,
of course.
Second, she is using mar
ried men to supply her with
an imitation of the pleasure
she might have through
friendships with eligible men.
She has even come to prefer
the imitation to the real
thing.
We think Harriet should
recognize that the relaxed at
mosphere she enjoys when
she dates a.married man is as
much her making as it is the
man's. It is possible that she
feels relaxed because she does
not expect anything signifi
