Found to Increase

Service) - DNA, one of the
basic life compounds and the
protein that makes up the
chromosome, is not the "trig
ger" that sets off cell division.
: Actually, there is ran in
crease in the synthesis of
DNA,. or deoxyribonuc 1 e i c
acid, immediately after the
nucleus divides, a team of
University of Wisconsin re
searchers here reported. Since
each daughter cell contains
chromosomal material equal
in quantity to what the oar-
ent nucleus contained, the
DNA . in cell nuclei must
double, Dr. Harold P. Rusch
said.
This doubling had been
thought to be the mechanism
that started cell division. Now
it appears that the cytoplasm,
the material surrounding the
nucleus, must influence cell
division.

egation to the leadership con
ference on the Seattle univer
sity campus.
They will leave Friday,
March 18, for Seattle and
spend three days at the uni
versity' attending seminars on
spirtiual, social and cultural
leadership as well as student
government. The social pro
gram will feature a banquet
to be followed by a 3 hour
cruise around Lake Washing
ton. On Sunday, the group will
attend Mass at the Cathedral
followed by breakfast. Later
in the day a tour of Seattle
is planned.
The trip is financed by St.
Mary's Student council as an
investment in leadership. Del
egates will share what they
. have learned with the rest of
the students. ,

The third issue of the
school paper, the Marion, was
distributed to the students on
Friday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m.
The paper's featured articles
were the junior-senior ban
quet, National Honor society
and induction of new mem
bers, the Sodality with their
new project, the Lenten Four.
The staff includes Editor
Anne Bennett, Sports Editor
John Snider, Business Edi
tor George Lucus and repor
ters, Lynne Parsons, Carole
Doyle, Pauline Ashton and
Karen Crevier.
Spectators were surprised
at the Pep Rally held in the
gymnasium Friday, March 4.
After the usual introduc
tion of the team, and short
talks by the priests and
Coach McKibbin, the cheer
leaders gave a preview of the
night's games. A Mustang was
hunted and gallantly killed
in the midst of a forest (Pep
Club members).
The rally ended with the
old familiar question: "Who's
going to win the game to
night?" and the answering
shout "We are."

Leaping ahead over the
leap year week end, the
Lance staff met the biggest of
their deadlines. The eleven
members of the staff could be
seen at odd hours typing,
pasting, retyping and con
densing materials that made

were drained as the deadline
came closer. A number of
classes were surprised a bit
as the yearbook camera cap
tured the students study hab
its. Now that the crisis has
been met, the annual mem
bers are going at a compara
tively slow and easy pace at
the completion of the remain
ing ten pages.
