sclerosis.

who have had the disease for
20 years and are still earning
their living or being a good
wife and mother. The neurol
ogists at the Mayo Clinic once
checked up on all of the pa
tients with multiple sclerosis
whom they knew in Roches
ter, Minesota, which was then
a city of some 30,000 inhabi
tants. As I remember, they
found that many of the pa
tients had had the disease for
25 years and half of them
were still getting around.
Unfortunately, we doctors
do not know the cause of the
disease. Whatever it is, it
tends to "eat the insulation
off" of nerves here and there
in the body, and this causes
numbness, and weakness of
muscles. As yet, we know of
no cure, and hence there is
no sense that I can see in
these people's traveling about
the country looking for some
one who will have a secret
miracle-working medicine
that no one else knows about.

As I have to keep telling doz

week, when a good doctor
tells . them that they have
some rare disease for which
no curative medicine is
known, there is no sense in
mortgaging ? the home and
traveling about, hunting for
someone who can work a
cure. Today, knowledge about
good drugs races around the
world over night. -'Cure'
Obviously Fake
If there is one thing I have
had hammered into me all
my life, it is that the man
who claims to have a cure for
some disease, but keeps this
secret, is no doctor; he is a
auack. Practicallv always,
with the passage of time, it
becomes obvious that nis
"cure" was a fake; and he
had been obtaining large
sums of money under false
pretenses. Sometimes, it is
Drobable that he was a simple
old fellow who believed in his
own foolishness, but that did
not helD the unhappy patients
who had traveled far to con
sult him. Recently. I have
heard of poor deluded people
who have mortgaged their
farm to go and consult a
quack they have heard about
in Germany or Switzerland.
The farther away a quack is,
the better people think ne
must be.
Every day I have to say
sadly to the frantic mother of
a child with - leukemia or
Hodgkin's disease, "I do not
see anv sense in your travel
ing to big medical centers, be
cause the fine able cancer ex
pert in your city is in constant
touch with the great research
centers." j
Everv month he receives
ahstracts of all articles on his
subject published in the civil
ized world. If any medicine
is discovered that looks prom
ising he can soon get some of
it. I hate to be so discourag
ing, but I hate, also, to see
people wasting all of their
savings.

is taking a hard look at the
stock market's current behav
ior and wonders, if it is wit
nessing the end of a long bull
market, or merely another
"correction."
The question of whether
bear market forces are now at
play arose on Thursday when
the Dow-Jones rail average
broke through its November
lows to the lowest level in
nearly 16 months.
Idea Disclaimed
Some technicians at first
interpreted the Thursday
break, which was paced all the
way by the rail section, as a
sign that a bear market holds
sway. However, the consen
sus auickly disclaimed sucn
an idea based solely on the
Dow theory.
One said: "You'd have to
look pretty hard to find that
kind of technical tneorist un
der the age of 55." However,
whatever its merits, the Dow
theory is considered a strong
factor in the market because
many people believe in it -
or know that a great many
others do.
A sampling of Wall Street
feeling about the current mar
ket follows:
New Base Seen
William Kurtz of Paine,
Webber, Jackson & Curtis be
lieves the market is still at
tempting to consolidate a new
base, and has not slipped into
bear market phase. Prices
will rise when the public de
cides to sell and institutions
begin to buy, Kurtz points out.
