Friday night then saw their
hopes quickly dashed by Ore
gon's No. 1 rated prep aggre
gation.
The Cavemen of the Cli
mate city, contending on their
home court, hemped three bas
kets in the first V2 minutes
of action for 6 to 0 jump on
the Medford Black Tornado.
Then, the Big Wind of the
Pear capital zipped into
point-making gear and hurled
in the next 12 markers to
crush GP ambitions. Jerry
Shults, Medford's early game
stalwart, cashed in for nine
of those tallies and got the
Tornado on the way to a 74
to 43 victory.
This triumph gave Med
ford's hoopsters a brilliant
undefeated record in their 16
game Southern Oregon con
ference and District 6 A-l
campaign. Coach Frank Roe
landt's league camphions
ended the regular season with
their 17th straight win for a
19-3 record. The Tornado will
go against Jesuit of Portland
on Wednesday night, March
16, in its opening conflict in
the state A-l tournament at
Eugene.
Shults Has 19
Medford was on top 15 to
9 at the quarter Friday night
and had 31 to 15 and 53 to
23 margins at the other inter
missions. Its biggest advan
tage., was 33 points at 61 to
28. .-
Shults led all scoring with
19 counters and his team
mate, Jerry Anderson had 16.
Rex Benner paced the Cave
men with 15. Lowell Dean
had 10 retrieves and Ander
son and Bob Quinney each
nine as the Black Tornado
dominated the rebounding 49
to 26.
The Tornadoes shot an un
spectacular .263 from the
field for the first half but
hit .536 in the second half
to make it .379 for the game.
Grants Pass averaged .263 for
the full route.
- Benner sank a long pusher
and a fine drive shot and
Larry Janssen hit a jumper
for the Cavemen's early gap.
Anderson got Medford's first

about two minutes contested
.in the mix. Shults came
through with a pusher and a
free counter. He netted push
ers from the side well out and
from the corner. Anderson
goaled from free line range
and Shults blazed in a long
jumper for the 12 to 6 spread.
Margin To Three
Clyde Murray flipped in a
free toss for Grants Pass and
Rex Benner a jumper for 12
to 9. Anderson's goal from
under the hoop and his free
heave closed out the scoring
for the period.
Benner fired in a long push
to drop Medford's edge to 15
to 11 in the first minute of
the second quarter. But
Grants Pass never got any
closer. The Cavemen man
aged only two field buckets
and two charity throws for
the stanza while Medford ran

- YMCA spring activity
schedule goes into effect on
Monday, -March 7, with the
program geared to better meet
the needs of ' people in the
community.
- Free swim classes will give
boys and girls a chance to
practice what they have been
taught. The program also pro
vides qualified instruction for
members aimed at making
their ; summer activities such
as boating, fishing, skindiv
ing and water skiing safer and
more enjoyable: ' .
Spring schedule has been
mailed to members. Those
members who failed to receive
a copy and others interested
may obtain a schedule at the

A men's evening program
also will begin Monday. Ev
ery Monday, Wednesday and
Friday " organized activities
such as exercises, volleyball,

formal. The classes will last
from 5:15 to 7:00 p.m. and

was voted most valuable
player during the 1959-1960
Southern Oregon Indepen
dent Basketball league.
Hughes, a member of the
. league championship club,
Hawkinson Tire and Tread

fourth high scorer in the
loop with 167' points, an
average of 16.7 per game.

moved to a 28 to 17 advan
tage when Ashland went for

quarter without a score. Half
time gap was 29 to 21 and
third panel count was 43 to
26.

Then Klamath swished seven

2, 8 to 6 and 10 to 8 scores
but KF was in front 14 to 10
when the period halted.
Klamath had a .351 field
shooting mark on 27 of 77 for
the evening and Ashland hit
15 of 57 for .263.
The Pels also won the jay
vee scuffle 58 to 37 with Bob
Lapley making 14 points for

Join OGA
Portland-IUPD - The Oregon
Golf association announced
Saturday it has changed its
constitution to permit proper
ly organized golf clubs in
Washington state counties
bordering the-Columbia river
into membership.
The ruling will allow the
Longview, Wash., club into
membership. The association
also voted membership to the
Springfield, Ore., golf club.
Ralph Swan of Royal Oaks
Country club, Vancouver,
Wash., was elected president
of the association. Prosser
Clark of Columbia-Edgewater,
Portland, was named vice
president and Charles Reyn
olds, La Grande, was re-elected
secretary-treasurer.
The association announced
it would combine its medal
and match play champion
ships in Portland late this
spring. A 54-hole tournament
will be held which will in
clude 18 holes June 19 and
then a "36-hole qualifying
round for places in the match
play championships.
The low man for the 54
holes will be the medal cham
pion and the low scorer in
the . last two 18-hole rounds
will be medalist for the, tour

St. Mary's tallied - on 15
field goals to the Mustangs 15
but the Maliners dumped in
nine of 18 tries from the foul
line while the Crusaders got
just six of 14. Miller had 12
points and Rick 11 for Malin
and Dick Evans 11 and Bob
Evans 10 for St. Mary's

In the first quarter the Cru
saders moved into a guick 5
to 0 lead but were unable
to widen the gap because of
cold shooting from the field.
With less than two minutes
remaining in the period the
Mustangs went into the lead
on three " quick field goals,
two by Rick and one by Il
lian. Crusader Bob Evans put
in a long jumper to put St.
Mary's back into the lead at
7-6.
In the second frame Rick
opened tne scoring with a
foul shot and Crusader Roger
Hout countered with a layin.
Illian added four points to the
Mustang score, and Jim Long

brother, Dick, added another
jumper to make the score 24
to 20. Then, Mustang Randy
Miller outdid "Bob's perform
ance by dumping in four long
jumpers. The Mustangs head
ed 29 to 26. Bob Evans added
another long jumper to cut
the Malin lead, to one point at
the end of the chukker.
