HOW TO MARRY WELL
I was just looking through
the new edition of Sylvanus
M. Duvall's book, "Before you
Marry." It contains much
good advice for any two peo
ple who are thinking of
marrying. As he says, so many
marriages fail today. I under
stand that about one in three
ends in the divorce court and
another one in three ends in
unhappiness: for years the
couple continue to live in a
house together, more or less
as brother and sister. As Du
vail says, choosing a marriage
partner is in some ways like
buying a used car. If you make
your choice only on the basis
of pretty lines and a good
paint job, your chances of at
taining satisfaction will be
poor. If you know how to
look "under the hood" for
qualities of character, good
sense and capacity for nffec
tion, then your chances will
be much better. As we all
know, one of the dangers
about marrying is that, dur
ing the courting period and
the engagement time, people
will put their best foot for
ward, they will hide their
bad habits, and they will try
to make out that they like
what the other one likes.
I remember a woman who,
every Saturday for a year be
fore she was married, used to
go with her beau to a base
ball, or a football, or basket
ball game. So far as he could
see, she adored sports just as
he did. Imagine his shock
when, a few days after the
wedding, she said, "Look; get
this into your head; I hate
sports and I am never again
going to a ball game."

Valley Man Being
Held on Charges
Arden Daryl Thurston, 27,
of Gregory rd., was arrested
Thursday night by sheriffs
officers on charges of bur
glary not in a dwelling.
He is being held in the
Jackson county jail charged
with burglarizing a service
station Jan. 3.
Thurston is charged with
taking saddles and other horse
gear. valued at $650. Sheriffs
deputies recovered two sad
dles, but the other gear was
thrown in the Rogue river,
Thurston told officers. One
of the missing saddles is val
ued at $185.
Deputies said Thurston sur
rendered himself when he
heard deputies were looking
for him.
Richard Edgar Herndon, 31,
of route 1, box 345, Eagle
Point, is charged with pos
sessing one of the saddles and
is being held in the county
jail on charges of possessing
and concealing stolen pro
perty, deputies said.

Seeking Man in Area
A man identified only as
Hutchings, who is believed to
be a resident of Jackson coun
ty, is, asked to contact Saint
Joseph's hospital at Tacoma,
Wash., sheriff's officers have
reported.
The sheriffs department re
ceived a letter from hospital
authorities saying that Hutch
ings mother, Katharyne Ber
nius, is ill at the hospital. She
is unable to give further in
formation due to her illness,
