Chatter
New York-UPD-It appears
now that profits for the see
ond quarter will not be quite
as good as for the first three
months, which should be ex
cellent, says Lucien O Hooper
of W. E. Hutton & Co.
And the consensus for the
third quarter, particularly for
the steel and auto industries,
Hooper notes, is that earn
ings will be considerably low
er than for the first half of
the year.
"One of the remarkable
things is the continued popu
larity of the so-called science
stocks. High price-earnings ra
tios are not inspiring any im
portant selling in this elassl
fication," he adds.
Spear & Staff recommends
purchase of Mack Trucks on
weakness, even though the is
sue is selling at around eight
times earnings. Despite the
adverse effects of the steel
strike, Mack set new highs in
sales and earnings for 1959,
the investment advisory serv
ice points out.
"... The Prospect of a
healthy credit background
has constructive implications
with respect to the longer
business outlook," says Sidney
B. Lurie of Josephthal & Co.
"We no longer need be fear
ful that tight money will
choke off the upturn . . . the
lagging residential building
industry may later be helped
by greater credit availability
. . . and the base supporting
capital goods expansion will
be broadened," Lurie notes.
MANIA FOR ALLIGATORS
Atlanta, Ga.-IWD-Roger Orr,
19, admitted at his arrest
Thursday that he had stolen
a six-foot alligator from the
city zoo three times in recent
months. "The guy just had
a mania for alligators," a de
tective said.

EVENING IN PARIS
DEODORANT ROLL-R
If you think we're enthusiastic about the revolutionary Corvair, leaf through the leading automotive,
sports and science magazines and see what the experts are saying. The quote above (by Jim Whipple of
Car Life) and those below will give you a good idea how they're greeting the car that "represents the
greatest collective engineering change made in any American automobile in the past 40 years."
"CorvaiVs steering is so light that at
parking speeds it feels power assisted;
it is so precise as to be absolutely
without plav. and it is fast enough to
allow complete control over every
situation. . . . Judged bv itself, the
steering system is among the finest
I have ever had the pleasure to
handle." .
Karl Ludvigftn.
Sports Can Illustrated
"Most surprising tiling to me outcide
of the excellent handling charac
teristics was the feeling of roominess
inside. I didn't realize how small the
car was until I got out, because I
didn't have the sensation of driving
a small ear and the headroom was
greater in the Corvair than in some
standard size cars. . . ."
L. H. Hauck, Automotive A'eus
The car steers like a feather and
is extremely quick. . . . This is
a beautifully designed automobile,
engineered by real pros. . . ."
Tom McCahill,
Mechanix Illustrated
"So far as shopping goes, the Corvair
is a housewife's dream. It's small and
easily maneuvered without any power
' steering, and so easily parked . . . it's
lot easier to unload a cart full of
groceries into a front trunk at the
supermarket than it is into a
rear one."
Rosemary Francis,
Popular Science
"I want to state as firmly as I can
that the Corvair handles as beauti
fully arid is as safe as if not safer
than any family car on the road
today."
Jim Whipple, Car Life
"There is none of the typical whine
normally associated with rear-engined
vehicles. Inside the car, the effect is
quite unlike anything we have ever
experienced. It almost seems that
there is no engine, and the general
effect is so quiet as to be almost
uncanny."
John R. Bond, Road & Track
"The Corvair must be driven to be
fully appreciated.. No written word
tan suffice for the genuine pleasure
that you will receive behind the
wheel of America's newest and most
advanced contribution to trans
portation . It is a great car."
