Under Arrest on
Battery Charge
Albany, Ore.-dlPD-A parole
officer from MacLarea School
for Boys has been arrested
by Linn county sheriffs of
ficers and charged with as
sault and battery of a Browns
ville youth.
' Fred J. Wright, 42, Albany,
was arrested on a charge in
volving an 18-year-old Mac-
Laren parolee who was. re
leased Saturday.
The youth said Wright met
him at the court house and
offered him a lide to Browns
ville. En route, the youth
said Wright told him he was
wanted for another charge in
Brownsville but he (Wright)
would fix it if the boy sub
mitted to punishment.
When the youth said he
. would rather be punished
than go back to jail, Wright
took him to his apartment and
subjected the boy to a beat
ing with a paddle, then took
him home, according to the
youth.

Sheriffs officer said the in
cident came out when the boy
started talking to friends in
Brownsville who called po
lice. An investigation was
launched and Wright was ar
rested when he entered Juve
nile Court on another mat
ter. Wright pleaded guilty to
the charge.
He told Judge Wendall P.
Tompkins he was conducting
a study for a doctors degree
at Stanford University.
Judge Tompkins ordered a
presentence investigation by
the State Board of Parole and
Probation.
