issue. Yet it has been tossed
into the political arena time
and again within recent
weeks," he said.
Mundt devoted much of his
weekly report to reprinting
subcommittee testimony by
Defense Secretary Thomas S. i
Gates. He commented that the 1
subcommittee was getting in- i
formation from the "experts"
and not from "the politicions
or the presidential aspirants." ;

had some harsh words for
those experts. He commented
that the services are still
fighting among themselves.
Vying for Dollars
"The fact is that our mil
itary forces are vying among
themselves for the taxpevers

thought for the overall well
being of either the nation's
financial position or our de
fense posture in comparison
with the Soviet Union.
' Ellender said true unifica
tion of the services could save
cast sums. He said he fav
ors spending all that is need
ed for defense, but he said
defense needs are not a "li-i
cense for our military lead
ers to waste money."

living m Los Angeles during
the week ending Jan. 30,
United States Public Health
Service data revealed here.
The previous week's record
was 64. The total number for
the year has hit 255 already,
compared with 81 in Los An
geles for the same period last
year.

ber of deaths from both dis
eases reported by 108 large
cities was i6 per cent higher!

try, however. Total deaths for
the last week reported were
higher than expected. They
were high in the East North
Central. South Atlantic, West
South Central, Mountain and
Pacific geographical divisions
of the country.
Sulphur Sought
In Ocean Water
New York-(UPB -The Free-
port Sulphur company is
building its Grand Isle mining
piam on smiting sands that
lie under 50 feet of water
seven miles at sea in a hur
ricane zone.
The magazine "Steelways"
reports that the steel "island."
built on stilts above the Gulf
of Mexico, will soon becin
pumping sulphur to shore de
pots through a unique steel
pipeline.
The magazine said it was
business arithmetic that
prompted construction of the
S30-m i 1 1 i o n, half-mile-long
Grand Isle project south of
New Orleans.
Of the 246 known onshore
subterranean sulphur deposits,
only 23 are commercially
leasible. Nine have been
worked and abandoned, and
the other 14 are now either
in production or undergoing
development.
So the sulphur industry
pushed its search for new de
posits offshore. Grand Isle
turned out to be a promising
site.
