into American minds on a

decisions in a world of radia
tion, radar, and rockets needs
at least an elementary back
grounding physics," it said in
a booklet, "Physics in . Your
High School," published by
McGraw-Hill Book Company,
New York .
"No doubt we shall have to
depend increasingly - on the
judgments of specialists to
whom all the facts are known.
However, there is real danger
that public lack of under
standing of the bases of cur
rent issues of this sort may de
lay or even prevent action on
their decisions."
How leading and other cit
izens are to learn some phy
sics was not the subject. They
were practical suggestions for
improving the appeal of phy
sics to high school students
and their elders. At present
only about one quarter of all
high school graduates know
some physics.
Can Be Doubled
As a start toward an even
higher percentage this num
ber can be doubled in the next
five years, the Institute said.
It can be done if you appeal
to the top half of the student

of the 20th Century on the
frontier of space and the
atom," and physics is the pro
gram. For that reason, the an
swer to the question of who
should study physics, is
"everybody," in the view of
the effort-maker, the Ameri
can Institute of Physics.
