Phoenix, Henley Vie
In A-2 Hoop Playoff
Seattle Downs
Portland Quint
United Press International
Gonzaga and Seattle romp
ed to easy victories in the
only major coast cage action
Wednesday night,
Whitworth tried a special
defense to stop the Zags" scor
ing machine, Frank Burgess.
Four men played a zone and
one man kept on Burgess. At
half, Whitworth was only two
points behind and Burgess
had but 7 points. But Burgess,
a junior who has broken six
of 14 school records already,
hit 27 points in the second
half.
He thus had 34 markers as
Gonzaga won 94-75.
Seattle's one-two punch of
Dave Mills and Don Ogorek
led the Chieftains to an 82
71 win over Portland. The
Chiefs piled up a 69-51 lead
In the second half and then
coach Vince Cazetta cleared
the bench.
Phoenix-Phoenix high bas
ketball team has been work
ing on offense mainly as it
preps for a subdistrict playoff
fracas.
The Pirates take on Henley
Friday night at Phoenix with
the winner to get a berth in
the full District 6 A-2 tourney
at Roseburg next week end.
Coach Jack Woodward has
had his Phoenix club working
on its attacking game, mostly,
with the feeling that Pirate
defense has been real good.
The mentor indicated that
Gerald Sloper, Mike Cons
bruck, Tom Atchison, Mike
Reese and Jim Floyd will
have starting assignments.
Phoenix suffered a blow
yesterday when Ron Baker
turned his ankle in practice.
Whether the injury is real
serious was not learned this
morning. Baker had been
ticketed for considerable duty
in the playoff game.
Henley, sparked by Ray
Jackson, will come here after
a recent non-league 42 to 39
nod over the Pirates. The
Hornets do not compete in
Rogue league basketball but
are granted the right to meet
the loop's second place team
for one berth in the district
runoff. Henley has most of
its action against Klamath
county Class B schools.
This has been considered
a rebuilding year at Henley.
Coach Fred Hess has only two
seniors on his squad Dick
Reiling and Jackson. Juniors
include Bert Allbritton, Floyd
Kendall, Larry Lugo and Bob
Chapman. A freshman, Kent
Gooding, 6-5, is tallest man
on the squad. Possible Henley
starters are Allbritton, Chap
man, Gooding, Jackson and
Kendall.
The Hornets have an upset
win over Malin, which took
the Klamath B school honors.
Phoenix tied with Eagle
Point for the Rogue league
second place" but gained the
Henley playoff on the
strength of beating EP twice
in the circuit.
Tiger Defeats
Ace 2nd Time
Chicago -flJPD- Gene "Ace"
Armstrong, his dreams of a
rapid climb toward the world
middleweight title interrupt
ed again by Nigeria's Dick
Tiger, refused to admit defeat
today.
"I thought I won the fight,"
he said. "He never hurt me.
But that's the way the bal
loon blows
Armstrong, a 27 -year -old
fighter who has lost only
twice in 20 pro bouts, both
times to Tiger, was about the
only person in the arena Wed
nesday night who thought he
won.
Tiger, 30, the British mid
dleweight titleholder, was
ahead on points on every
card. United Press Interna
tional and Referee Walter
Brightmore both had it 49-43
for him. Judge Bill Doty gave
him a 47-44 edge and Judge
John J. Schreiner scored it
47-45 for Tiger.
