of the Olympic also-ran cate
gory today on the shining sil
ver blades of Carol Heiss.
Oueen Carol, three-times
world champion and already
leading her 25 competitiors by
a wide margin, should pick up
the gold medal in ladies' fig
ure skating. And that wouio
nut a Yank on the top pedes
tal of the victory stand ior tne
first times in the games.
The U.S. team, point-
blanked Monday in the un
official scoring, also could
pick up a bronze medal in
this competition if Barbara
Ann Roles of Temple ouy,
Calif., can hold her third
place standing after the com
pulsory figures were com
pleted Monday.
And there is a chance that
one of the beauty queens of
the U.S. giant slalom ski team

be pigtailed Penny Piteu of
Laconia, N.H., Ail-American

three have a strong chance.
Other Wins Unlikely
But there seems no chance
for victory in the other two

The speed-skating members
of the U.S. team are in rebel
lion and it is doubtful that
the Yankee skaters can be de
pended on to give much of a
challenge to the crack ath
letes from Russia and the
other European nations.
Several of the U.S. team
members complained to Irv
ing Jaffee, former U.S. Olym
pic Champion that they were
getting no attention irom
their coach or manager.
Bingham is in the Olympic
infirmary, recovering from a
flu attack, and could not be
reached for comment.
Meanwhile, the Russians
pushed ahead in their rout of
the unofficial team champion
ship. They had chalked up
86 Vz points against a surpris
ingly strong German team
that had 48. Sweden was next
with 29 and the U.S., which

the championship of the Ore
gon Collegiate conference.
A win for the Red Raiders
who polished off Portland
State twice last week end
would give them a cinch for
a share of the OCC title. OTI
will finish out the season
against Oregon college Fri
day and Saturday in Klamath
Falls and an Owl loss would
give the Raiders sole posses
sion of the crown.
Three times the Raiders
and Owls have met this year
with the result being a lone
win for the Raiders. In their
initial game Jan. 19 in Ash
land the Raiders were tops at
74-70.
Games Related
On two other occasions in
Klamath Falls, the Owls won
71-64 and 63-54.
Now, OTI holds the lead in
the OCC by one-half game
over the Raiders with an 8-5
record to SOC's 9-6.
No matter what happens to
night between the two clubs,
the Raiders still have posses
sion of one tournament berth
in the District II NAIA play
offs at South Salem high
school March 1 and 2.

along with his athletes in a
Feb. 22 Sports Illustrated ar
ticle, "Masters of Endurance."
The article by Tex Maule
compares Bowerman and Mi
haly Igloi, tutor at Santa
Clara Youth center, and tells
of the competition of their
distance runners. Bowerman
is described as "a big, outgo
ing man with a somewhat vio
lent sense of humor." Igloi
and Bowerman are termed
two of the finest distance
coaches in the business.
The former Medfordite is
credited with having devel
oped more home-grown dis
tance stars than any other
American coach. Maule men
tions Bowerman s deep re
gard for the ' psychological
problems of his athletes and
says his success with his dis
tance men comes as much
from this aspect as from his
considerable technical gifts.

ord, went on a 15-1 rampage
in an overtime period at
Gainesville, Fla., Monday to
wrap up the Southeastern
Conference's spot in the big
post-season carnival by beat
ing Florida, 69-55.
Notre Dame 15-7 accepted a
"member at large" berth in
the same tourney earlier in

first tourney rival, if first the

Sports, Inc., is removing the
last obstacle to his June 22
title defense against Floyd
Patterson at the Polo
Grounds.
Ingemar, who arrived Sun
day night by plane from
Switzerland via Paris, made
his happy statement shortly
after Thomas A. Bolan, treas
urer of Feature Sports had
announced:
"We are buying out Floyd
Patterson Enterprises, includ

vision, movies and radio of
