"baby watch" spirit this
week. He had 19 magnums
of champagne delivered to
the palace to celebrate the
coming e.vent.
A palace spokesman said
the birth, the first to a reign
ing British monarch in a
century, probably would
come before Sunday.
THE first royal birth to a
reigning British monarch
in a century!
That would mean that the
last one was to Queen Vic
toria and her consort, Prince
Albert. You can bet your bot
tom dollar that if Albert had
rushed out and ordered 19
magnums of champagne (a
magnum is a half gallon)
with which to celebrate the
occasion Victoria would have
read him a sermon that would
have curled his whiskers.
Times change in Britain,
as elsewhere.
INCIDENTAL information:
Victoria and Albert had
nine children-four sons and
five daughters. So, inevitably,
the time came when a royal
birth was a more or less rou
.tine affair.
MORE incidental informa
tion. Victoria's father died be
fore she was a year old, and
her mother brought her up,
VERY carefully. Not until
she was 12 years old was she
permitted to learn that she
was to be a queen.
When told, she said at
once:
"I will be GOOD."
WELL, she was good.

It was ' during Victoria's

came to its fullest flower.

Carpenter has spent the last
42 years inside movie theaters,
but still hasn't seen a film
from beginning to end.
Carpenter, a 62-year-old
projectionist, has gone all the
way from the silents to the
new 70mm reels of "Solomon
and Sheba."
But he has never seen a
complete movie because "I
don't have time."
. "I only look at the screen
for defects in the film. I watch
a little of the movie, but I
never follow the story," he
said.
Carpenter was the first pro
jectionist to unreel a talking
movie in Dallas.
"The first talkie was a
newsreel," he recalled. "I
watched the audience straight
en up and I figured talkies
were here to stay."
Few Drug Addicts
Found in Masks
Anchorage, Alaska - (UPD -An
official of the Alaska State
Police reports that the 49th
state has one of the lowest
incidences of narcotics addic
tion per unit of population in
the United States.
Police Lt. Larry Mayfield
said Alaska has no real prob
lem with illegal drugs except
for "an occasional hophead."
Mayfield indicated that for
the past number of years the
market for drugs in Alaska
has been too small to warrant
a big smuggling operation. He
said he believed the few users
in Alaska "get their narcotics
by mail from other states."
