New Federal Pension
Law to Be Discussed
At Meeting Next Week

The public has been invited
to hear a discussion on the
new federal pension law for
veterans and their widows
and children at a meeting in
the VFW hall, 42 North Front
st., at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb.

officer, has announced.

cuss the new law and answer
questions submitted.
The new act, Public Law
86-211, will award pension to
veterans and widows and chil
dren of World War I, World
war II and the Korean Con
flict, on the basis of need
Bianconi said.
Graduated Scale
Payments will be on a grad
uated scale, depending on in
dividual outside incomes. A
person already in receipt of
pension on June 30, 1960, will
be given his or her choice as
to whether pension is to be
based on the present law or
the new one. This clwttce is
vital to those currently avceiv-
ing pension and wno will
qualify for pension in the fu
ture. Pension entitlement aris
ing after June 30 can be based
only on the new act.
"The new act will make
many veterans, unremarried
widows and children eligible
lor the first time to pension
based on nonservice connect
ed disability or death," Bian
coni said.
For example, he said, it re
moved the requirement that
a World War II or Korean
Conflict veteran must have
had a service-connected dis-

ow or children to be eligible

erans. Some persons will be
eligible to higher pension pay
ments than previously. Oth
ers will qualify for pension
for the first time by reason
of higher income ceilings.
Decision to Make
On March 1, all those pres
ently on the pension rolls will
have a decision to make, Bi
anconi said. Each will receive
a new income questionnaire
which is to be signed and re
turned to the Portland Vet
erans administration regional
office if the recipient wishes
to receive benefits under the
new law after July 1, its ef
fective date.
"Brannock will clarify the
distinction between the two
laws to enable persons receiv
ing pension to make the right
choice, Bianconi said.
Once the new act has been
selected, an individual can
never return to the benefits
of the old one, and a mistake
ia judgment could result in
substantially smaller pension
payments for the future."
The legislation does not af
fect compensation paid to vet
erans or dependents of service
connected disability or death.

ter was draped in memory of
Mrs. Inez Tedrick, who was a
charter member of the Grange
when it was organized 28
years ago.
The next meeting will com
mence at 8:15 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 19. It will be visitation
nignt and members of all
Granges will be welcome. The
lecturer has planned a varied
program, including Dr. Elmo
Stevenson, president of South
ern Oregon college, who will
speak.
On Feb. 20, the degree team
will confer the third and
fourth degrees at North Pa-
cific Grange, north of Grants
Pass.
