Police Chores Due To Increase
Gladstone - (UPB - Attorney
General Robert Y. Thornton
told the Gfeidstone Kiwanis
club Thursday night that Ore
gon law enforcement agencies
will face heavier responsibil
ities in the coming decade.
One of the factors, he said,
is an expected increase in Ore
gon's population by 25 per
cent in the next 15 years with
a . 40 per cent concentration
of the state's people in Port
land and fringe areas.
He said an increase in the
number of juveniles, in pro
portion to the general popu
lation will require additional
police and. juvenile officers.
Unless salaries of law en
forcement officers are tied to
the cost of living, he said,
inflation will hit police
and sheriffs offices by driv
ing trained personnel to bet
ter employment.
Thornton said the high cost
of living also will . directly
contribute to higher crime
rates by forcing more moth
ers to leave the home to seek
outside employment.
The attorney general esti
mated that crime now costs
every family in Oregon about
$500 a year.

Sheriff Art Wermuth said
two or three men were seen
parked on a road near Coors'
ranch home south of Golden
for about an hour Monday,
the day before Coors disap
peared. There was no indication the
Coors family had received a
demand for ransom.
The sheriff said he believed
of the nation's wealthiest
brewing families, has been
missing since Tuesday morn
ing. He left his ranch home at
8 a.m. for the brewery, 10
miles north of Golden, driv
ing a truck. Coors apparently
got no further than a bridge
over Turkey creek, two miles
from his ranch.
The truck, its motor still
running, was found at the
bridge approach.

Members decided to have a
swimming party.
