A Case of Hysteria
Every so often when I read
that some person has been
awarded 3200,000 because he
SPfn or she was
paralyzed
from the
waist down by
some minor
accident or by
the injection
of some drug
that has prov
en itself

cases, I wonder . if the dis
ease was the very common
hysteria. That disease can
produce: almost anything in
the way of spectacular symp
toms. Often we physicians are
almost certain that a neurotic
person's paralysis or severe
illness is due to hysteria, but
it may be very hard to prove.
I just heard Lowell Thomas
tell of a young lady from
Ragusa in Italy who, after an
accident, lost her voice and
just whispered. Any good
physician should have known
that the most likely cause of
the woman's trouble was hys
teria. Unable to be sure of it,
the Italian physicians wheel
ed her into an operating-
room. There sne sat up ana
said loudly; "Let me out of
here; I do not need any opera
tion." What io Do With an Enlarged
Gland
People ask me what should
be done with a large gland
(lymph node) which has ap
peared in their neck, and
instead of going down, is
slowly enlarging. I think their
home physican would agree
with me that often the thing
to do, and to do quickly, is to
cut down on the lump and
either take it out or remove
a little of it for microscopic
examination. This will enable
the physician to tell if it is
only . an . inflammation, or if
it is a cancerous doughter
growth, (metastasis). If ' it
should be cancerous, the na
ture of the cells may suggest
that the main growth is in
the back of the nose, or the
inner lining of the skull, or
the thyroid gland, or the
lungs, or the stomach. Some
times the growth and the
gland can be shrunk up with
powerful radiation, as from a
cobalt bomb.
