Parchment Found
In Caye May Be
Dead Sea Scrolls
Tel Aviv. Israel -lUPD- Ar-
cheologists hoped today they
may have uncovered another
cache of Dead sea Scrolls in
an obscure cave once used as
a hideout by rebels against the
(Romans.
They reported finding frag
ments of parchment scrolls,
believed to have been written
about the same time as the
Dead Sea Scrolls.
Mere Finds Promised
The new scrolls are the first
found on the Israel side of the
Deag Sea. Experts said they
give promise of more such
finds in the area.
Dr. Yohanan Aharoni said
he believes there are at least
three more bidden nearby.
The fragments found last
week were dug out of caves
rjgerlooking the Dead Sea
three miles north of Massada.
To reach the caves, Ahar
oni's team used ropes to scale
660 feet of sheer limestone
rock cliff, part cf the side of
Nahal Tse-Elim Canyon.
From Book of Exodus
Aharoni said two fragments
are from the book of Exodus
and their text and size show
they were part of Phylacter
ies. One comprised verses one
to ten of Chapter 13 and the
other verses 11 to 16 of the
same chapter.
Another fragment of papy
rus on which Hebrew script
were visible has not yet been
unrolled. Itwas believed to
be part of a letter.
Qumran. where the Dead
Sea Scrolls were found, is
about 43 miles from the caves
Aharoni's party explored.
