Oregon Couple's
Hobby: Collecting
Driver's Licenses
Bedford. England - (LTD -Mr.
and Mrs. James L. Brom-'
field of Newport. Ore., make
hobby of collecting driver's
licenses all over the world.
But they flunked in Bedford.
Bromfield, 72, a retired mo
tel owner, was born in Eng
land but moved to the United
States. He is one of the 100
senior surviving members of
the Royal Automobile Club of
Great Britain.
The organization gave him
a pre-World War I race driv
ing license for Brooklyn, N.Y.
where much race driving was
done before the first world
war.
Later he passed tests in -Hong
Kong, the Philippine
Islands, Malayn, Oregon and
Vancouver, B.C. His wife Ida C
obtained her first driver's li
cense in 1907 and later quali
fied in Malaya, Philippine Is
lands, Cairo, Oregon and
drove a school bus in New
port. The Bromfields said they
were tempted to try the test
in Bedford when they heard
that an English woman who
drove during the war for the
army had failed her test.
"We thought we would have
a go," Bromfield said. "But
the tester in Bedfor.. did not
like my driving or my wife's.
He failed us both."
Bromfield said the tester
objected to the way he and
his wife waded into a right
hand turn between gaps in
traffic instead of waiting.
"But he also didn't like my
not using the handbrake while
turning around in a narrow
street," Bromfield added. "He
admitted I was expert enough
not to have to use it, but he
said it was reauired in the
regulations.
"But the tester said he had
lot of trouble with Ameri
cans so perhaps there is a
prejudice, Bromfield said.
The American couple can
use their home state license
while they are in Britain, but
refusing to take defeat.
tney ve toth decided to try
the British driving test else
where than Bedford.
