reported on a long-term study

a greater-than-average chance
of having parents and grand
parents with a high blood
pressure. There is some ten
dency, also to inherit coronary I
heart disease. I

can give himself a wonderful
break just by stopping smok
ing. The Polio Situation
This past summer it ' has
been discouraging to see how
many cases there were of po
lio; and naturally, the first
reaction of many persons was
to say, ;'I told you so; the Salk
vaccine is no good." But a
careful study of what actually
happened shows that all the
blame cannot be put on the
vaccine; most of it must be
laid at the door of those many
mothers who did nbt know
enough or care enough to take

drugs now much used for the these mothers were illiterate
reduction of appetite contain
a substance called phenylpro
panolamine. According to an
author in the Journal of the
American Medical Associa
tion, its . effects are not pro
nounced. If one takes enough
of it to take away much of
the appetite, it is likely to
have some undesirable side
effects. A 'reducing" drug
sometimes put in chewing
gum is said to be benzocaine.
This is supposed to anesthe
tize the taste buds or nerve
endings in the mouth, but ac
cording to the expert, it has
not been proved to everyone's
satisfaction that this will less
en the appetite.
According to the expert
writing in the Journal of the
AMA, "there is no vitamin,
or mineral, or protein food
supplement that will produce
a reduction in body weight."
Drugs of the amphetamine or
dexedrine type can lessen the
appetite, but they, are nerve
stimulants, and hi e h c e had
better not be taken m- the af
ternoon if they, are not to in
terfere with slep that night.
I am a bit afraid of these
drues because I have known
a few persons who got to tak
ing a handful of the tablets
every day.
According to the Govern
ment experts, "there is no de
vice effective for 'spot reduc
ing,' 'melting away' fat, rub
bing or vibrating it off, or
breaking up fatty deposits."
One cannot count on the vi
brators to do the work. Un
fortunately, a good sensible
reduction diet is still the only
good treatment for a fat per
son. Lung Volume and Smoking
Drs. H. Blackburn,, J. Bro-
zek, and H. L. Taylor of Lan
caster, Pennsylvania recently
reported a study made of lung
volumes and vital capacities
in the cases of men averaging
52 years of age. Some were
smokers and some non-smok
ers, some were heavy smok-
errf, and some had stopped for
at least a year.
Interesting was the finding
that the vital capacity (the
amount of air a man can blow
out of his lungs) was smaller
in all of the smokers than in
the non-smokers. The man
with a low vital capacity is
persons who perhaps had not
even heard of the vaccine.
Significant is the fact that 65
per cent of the children who
last summer got paralytic po
lio had not been vaccinated.
Fourteen per cent had had
three "shots," which shows
that the vaccine is not per
fect. Only 2.5 per cent had
had four or more "shots."
What I am very hopeful
about is the fact that in many
parts of the world the new
"oral" or "live" vaccine has
been swallowed by many mil
lions of children with appar
ently excellent results. The
only reason that, it is not be
ing used widely in this coun
try is because of the fear of
some men that, with many
"passages" of the virus
through human beings, it
might regain its original pow
er to cause paralysis. In a
year or two, if this does not
happen, it may be that all
that our children will need in
order to be protected from
polio will be one teaspoonful
of the medicine.
