SPRING TRAINING Terry Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Smith of Lake Belton, Texas, is getting in some early
practice for the coming marble season. Although the only
spring she has seen so far this year is spring showers, she
isn't taking chance on someone getting the jump on sharp
ening the eagle eye. (UPI Telephoto)
Small Worlds
Around Us

We Might Call Vines
Snakes of Plant World
If we looked at plants with
the same objective with which
we consider animals, we
would probably classify vines
as the snakes of the plant
world.
Any plant with a long
slender stem that creeps,
clambers, crawls or climbs
by winding itself around a
support or holding fast with
tiny vegetative fingers or ten
drils can be numbered among
the plants called "vines."
Some clamber silently up
the perpendicular sides of a
building or a wall, their tiny
holding rootlets resembling
clasping fingers, wriggling
and squirming to enter a
crack or crevice. Some vines
show almost plant-intelligence
by holding their leaves and
stems flat against the sup
porting surface to avoid tear
ing winds or other factors
that might tear them loose.
Timid Vines
Some vines appear almost
timid, emerging from the
earth that cradled them as if
afraid, and later grasping ea
gerly some support as if in
apology for clambering
aboard. Others are bold and
aggressive, may eventually
destroy by strangulation, the
host plant c- which they for
merly leaned for support.
Vines are unusual inasmuch
as most of them depend upon
some other plant or object for
upport. Being naturally
weak, they can only attain
their place in the sun by
climbing and grasping trees,
racks or buildings. Some nev
er develop beyond the stage
ahere they can cling to small
plants, hardly larger than
themselves.
Vines are equipped with
various kinds of clasping, or
finger-like tendrils, that either
grip or penetrate the support
in order to hold on and grow
ever upward. To attain this,
many ingenious methods have
been developed. All are suc
cessful depending on the en
vironment, the variety or the
surface over which the vine
is desirous of growing. Gen
erally, these little "holding
fingers" commonly called ten
drils only keep the vine in po
sition. They carry no food or
water to the leaves or stems.
Tiny 'Hands'
There are vines that actu
ally appear to send out tiny
"hands" that seek and find a
firm grip on flat surfaces.
Once affixed they hang on
with an actual "death grip."
They can be torn in two be
fore they can be torn loose.
Some tendrils seem to ex
ude a cement-like fluid that
becomes exceedingly sympa
thetic with the surface, actu
ally gluing the plant stem to
the support.
Vines serve an important
function in the plant world.
In many places they literally
tie the tropical forest togeth
er, creating of themselves,
powerful vegetable ropes that
twine and hold with a tena
cious grip. The vines may be
"lazy,", but most of them show
considerable initiative. All
their efforts go Jto "getting
somewhere.' They waste no
time or energy in creating a
trunk when some one else's
will do as well.. . .
